Sight fishing, actually looking down the hole and seeing it mouthed/vanish and/or a super sensitive/adjustable well balanced spring bobber on the rod that may rise/sink a tiny amount and/or see the line have a tiny twitch but the bobber never moves. May sound more difficult than it is, just get used to that kind of approach on ice. Do use an underwater camera at times, amazing to see Bull 'gills, Slab Crappie and especially Jumbo Perch take your bait in, chew on it and spit it out without any hint on the surface than anything's going on. Cold water panfish is an entirely different world

Red circle hook size 12 or 10 when fishing small baits. I go as big as size four when using crawlers in June/July for bulls.

Sizes 10 & 12.

I'm the odd man out, I use much bigger hooks, 2's and 4's/long shank for Redear and bluegill. Miss very few with these hooks and don't have as many gut hooks because they're bigger hooks. I've still got the 6's and 8's in my tackle box from several years ago but noway I'd use them anymore.

I did recently buy some size 6 circle hooks, don't know if I'll like them though.

You're not an odd man out Troy. Actually, if you compare the hook sizes by overlapping them, the circle hooks #8 and #10 is similar to the size #2 and #4 long shanks. I have them too. I don't normally use the long shank unless I'm aiming for multi-species with nice pieces of fat worms sitting at the end. We normally use it on M&Ms (1 fat mealworm - 2 mini marshmallows - another fat mealworm to complete the sandwich). The long shank helps hold everything together.  I catch crappies, bullhead and channel cats, as well as 2lbs and less basses with these hooks. Occasional 9" gills or redears would hammer the hooks as well. Those boys had larger mouth than their stomachs.
