You're not an odd man out Troy. Actually, if you compare the hook sizes by overlapping them, the circle hooks #8 and #10 is similar to the size #2 and #4 long shanks. I have them too. I don't normally use the long shank unless I'm aiming for multi-species with nice pieces of fat worms sitting at the end. We normally use it on M&Ms (1 fat mealworm - 2 mini marshmallows - another fat mealworm to complete the sandwich). The long shank helps hold everything together. I catch crappies,…

I catch crappies, bullhead and channel cats, as well as 2lbs and less basses with these hooks. Occasional 9" gills or redears would hammer the hooks as well. Those boys had larger mouth than their stomachs.
I'm the odd man out, I use mu…tag:bigbluegill.ning.com,2011-12-19:2036984:Comment:2278972011-12-19T21:50:50.409ZTroy Dormanhttps://bigbluegill.ning.com/profile/TroyDorman

I'm the odd man out, I use much bigger hooks, 2's and 4's/long shank for Redear and bluegill. Miss very few with these hooks and don't have as many gut hooks because they're bigger hooks. I've still got the 6's and 8's in my tackle box from several years ago but noway I'd use them anymore.

I did recently buy some size 6 circle hooks, don't know if I'll like them though.

Sight fishing, actually looking down the hole and seeing it mouthed/vanish and/or a super sensitive/adjustable well balanced spring bobber on the rod that may rise/sink a tiny amount and/or see the line have a tiny twitch but the bobber never moves. May sound more difficult than it is, just get used to that kind of approach on ice.
Primarily a Tungsten ice jig with plastics user year around. #10 during open water, #14 is the basic in winter but a #20 on 8 - 12oz leader is not out of the question if they get really finicky and they're just kissing it. When it's cold and they're hitting like that it's lip hookups, very, very rarely a swallow. Catch plenty of 8"+ on the #20, if swallowed it's back to the #14

Walmart brand #8 and #10 octopus circle hooks, Gamakatsu #10, #12, and #14, various brands of circle hooks #8 and #10, and #10 bait hooks when I'm out. Other than that, jigs. They don't swallow jigs.

I like size 6 and Its reduce for bluegill to swallow a bait! Sometime size 8 for right size of bait like giant redworms!
