I used to land a number of them about four years ago. I am in SE Florida near the Loxahatchee Preserve on 441. I do not target them, but as I said I was landing a number of them. I caught them on streamers, on a six weight rod up in areas with a lot of cover - just like bluegill.

Lately I have had a lot of success hooking up chilids - wow! once you've had a couple of these on, you're addicted. They fight like mad pit bulls. They are typically slight (very slightly) larger than bluegill; however, I caught one yesterday that had to have been 2 1/2 lbs. I had taken in over ten in a row - all small. I decided it was time to go and I cast into an area that was highly probable I would loose my leader: high say grass, paddies and a culvert. The paddles and saw grass were in a precariious position, but I thought what the heck I am willing to loose my leader since its had been so good. After I cast (I had a popper dropper on - nymph on the bottom) i stripped into and under the paddies. The line became tangled in the paddies. Then bang!!!!! bank!!!! boy what a fight

I am not familiar with Warmouth. From the avitar pic it looks like a very dark colored black crappie. Are they much different?

I've caught them around the parts of SC I fish. Used to get them in FL, too.
My avatar pic shows me holding one from the South Edisto river. I pull them from wood and cover, mostly, using worms as bait.
I don't know anyone who targets them.

Jason.....I too don't target them, but I catch a lot of them every year. Almost always in weeds or grass that is 2-3 feet deep near shore. I seem to catch most of them on an MM minnow (see Bluegill Fly Tying group, look for Improved MM minnow.)

Their big mouth can easily grab most any bluegill fly. Minnow imitations seem to work best for the Warmouth.......Don in SC…

I caught several Warmouth yesterday, drop-shotting live minnows to the bottom under a crappie dock, then giving a couple cranks up off the bottom. They were tiny things! Maybe all of 4" long! But boy, did they hit that minnow.

I catch several hundred every year Jason fishing in the Carolinas........Warmouth prefer slow moving, swampy areas with heavy cover like flooded wood and tree tops.....One of the best places to catch them in the South Carolina Low Country is reservoirs like Moultrie and Goose Creek......Tidal areas like Bushy Park will hold a few in isolated spots but try heavily wooded areas in the reservoirs starting in the Spring......They spawn in slightly warmer water than other sunfish, preferring…
