Bluegill - Big Bluegill

Do you love big bluegill?

Can anyone share some tips on casting very light lures? I've already switched to braid, downsized my line, and upgraded my reel, so I suspect all that's left is technique and practice. Any and all suggestions greatly appreciated.

Why not fish a fly rod and reel. Since the line is weight forward you could cast 1/200 oz a country mile. Why limit to a rod and reel

Joe I dabbled with fly fishing 40 years ago. Had a lot of fun using a fly rod....chasing Gills with it. Mostly using small popping bugs. What you say is so but I can't work a small spinner...or even a jig....with a fly rod and reel. The spinning reel is more effective in allowing me to do that...IMHO. Now that may be a shortcoming on my part instead of the fly rod.

It's gonna cast great, i can't wait to see what your WFO (Walt Foreman Outfitters) rod looks like.

YA KNOW WALT by the time we are all done with this rod discussion we are going to have this kid so confused he won't know what to do!!!!!!!!!! I'll get out of the discussion for now and see how it all shakes out!!!!! By the way anyone out there ever bought a really expensive graphite rod and broke it on the first outing , ESPECIALLY WHEN IT'S COLD OUT?!!!!!!!!

I think we have all done that. This very thing helped me decide to try a custom made rod. I have 4 Fenwick Elite Tech River Runners that I really liked. My 6' 8" UL model had been sent back 3 times for a new one covered under warranty for breaking at the tip. My costs was only 9.95$. But on my 4th break they decided the break was misuse...and probably was. But they still had a replacement plan....I think it was 86% of MSRP. Even though I liked the rod I did not relish paying that kind of money to replace the rod for the 4th time....it was time to go the custom route and decided to use that money to help pay for a new rod. One with a much softer...slower tip. Whatever term we choose to use we all know it is a slower action rod. To me the term fast also means.....stiff and brittle....LOL.

                                                                                                             Regards

THAT'S TOO BAD RANDY about your rod and you are right in your assesment about stiffness and brittle of graphite.....

my last tip for casting a light line and bug;; to me;; its how far you can cast;; ACCURATELY!  its kind of like shooting a gun ; really. if your not accurate at long range  shorten the range till you hit!  also; if you can cast a country mile; what if you do catch one? to much slack line?? will the fish go under a snag? will you loose more than you catch?

wow lots of good advice. mine is simple make sure the spool on your reel is full! I've had people in the back of the boat that couldn't reach the honey hole because their spinning rod spool was half full.

Like Joe if fishing a tiny jig I use the fly rod. In fact I tried a very tiny jig on my spinner and found my casting skill somewhat diminished since I hadn't practiced with that rig in some time. so  practice and if you made changes to your rig try it in the yard before you head to the water.

Thanks for all the tips, guys.
