Jim, it 's all in the bend of the rod. I've had peacock bass hit the fly when it's fully extended and the 4# test leader popped as advertised, saving the rod. (it's recommended you use leader 5# test or smaller so the leader will break and not the rod tip) I've landed carp up to 3 ½ pounds on you 4# test leader and my largest fish is a 4 pound peacock bass. I don't recommend going for these larger fish… the under a pound size is a lot more fun… but if one accidentally grabs your fly, it…

I use the 13 foot rods (5:5 and 4:6). A bradded line 12 to 13 foot… and 4 to 6 feet of 4# test leader.
I'll be sure to do that!

But with a fly rod you have all your line and your backer. All is set to break before your rod if set up correctly. You have a long way to tired the fish out before he can break off. I put an example below of a striper I caught on my 2wt. Granted I broke off about 6 before I finally caught 1 but my line broke at its weakest point the leader.…

That will work - done that myself with not-tenkara panfish rods. I've got a 9 and 10 footer just for this. I've also taken the center section out of 15 and 17 foot teles and used them that way.
One way to know if the tenkara will take what you can dish out........

been researching this and they land some good sized fish on these rods.some pretty big trout and carp and smallmouth bass.so i.m sure they will hold up.there are stiffer and softer versions of the rods.i fish some places that dont allow boats or wading and the fish hold under over hanging bushes and it is tough to cast a fly or bait to where they are.some of these rods are only a couple ounces so fishing at a right angle from shore shouldn;t be a problem.i already taught myself how to cast a…
