Thanks, Dan. Fly Fishing is the way I relax and have fun. Too many fly fishers out there think they have to have perfect casts, have at least 20 rods, use tapered leaders, etc., they get so caught up in how they think they are supposed to be and act that they forget about having fun and catching fish. The fish don't care about anything other than that we throw them something they want to eat when they want to eat it. I just care about making the fish happy.

Man, I've had similar experiences with bass while fly fishing for bream and its a blast! Well maybe not a 6.5 lber on a 3 wt. haha. I have to agree with everything on here. I use straight 4 lb. test as my leader and use whatever rod is available at the time and whatever flies i have bought/tied. Just go out there and fish, and if you do it enough you will inevitably find a few blind hawgs.

Having lived for many years in La. mostly around Lake Charles I too have felt the fear of will this leader hold when one of the plate sive biggents stare for deep water. My biggist was out of a not so known lake in LA. called Kepler. I now live in Kansas and satisfy my needs with 9-10 inchers But I have to admitt that the fly tying bug got me and I fear it my fatal. Again a great artical.

Your article has a great deal of common sense plus tips on how to fish and what with. I think it probably fits the vast majority of the common guys and that's why it resonates so well. Great job.

There are many recognized "awards" for outstanding catches like the 10 x award "200 lbs on 20 lb test" , but a 6.5 on a 3 wt gets my award for 2x the rod weight! A 12 lb on a 6 wt seems possible, and certainly a 24 lb on a 12 wt has been done, but you set some sort of record- way to go!

Usually a big fish won't burn that much energy for a small amount of protein, you must have dropped it in her "bed" and she was cleaning house!

Wow! I am honored guys! I wrote that a few years ago for a now defunct website, Texas Fly Report, and it has been copied on a number of sites since then. I am not a writer by any stretch of the imagination, just a fly fisherman who wanted to share my experiences with others so that they aren't intiminated by all the technical aspects of fly fishing, so that they can just go out and have fun and catch fish. I have not improved my casting since I wrote that back in 2004, in fact it's probably gotten worse. But I still catch a lot of fish.

Back in March I had a really neat experience that I think you will enjoy. I was fishing in a 28 acre lake near Dallas, using my 7', 3-wt trying to catch bream with a tiny bream fly that kind of looks like a small woolly bugger, using #1 tippet as a leader. I was in the feeder creek and had just caught two bluegills by a stump. I cast back to the stump again and suddenly had a REAL fish on. After about 30 seconds this HUGE bass jumped out of the water! It jumped three times before I finally got it to hand. I weighed it on my Boga grip and it was right at 6 1/2#. It wasn't the biggest bass I have caught on a fly rod (that was a 9 lber I caught on my 6/7-wt), but it certainly was the biggest fish I have ever pulled in on my 3-wt! It was fun!
In a strange reversal of fort…tag:bigbluegill.ning.com,2010-12-22:2036984:Comment:1135022010-12-22T05:16:53.667ZDoug Dodsonhttps://bigbluegill.ning.com/profile/DougDodson

In a strange reversal of fortunes, I was a plastic worm fisherman when I was a teenager, and my dad was a long rodder, primarily bass, but loved to catch bluegill and bream.

One day it was too windy to fly fish, and he picked up one of my rods with an early plastic worm, a "FlipTail" in purple and proceded to bag a large largemouth. After that his flyrod got dusty, until I decided to try it. After my first bluegill I was the one hooked.
