Bluegill - Big Bluegill

Do you love big bluegill?

I have been UL fishing for years and still have issue with this. I try to make sure I don't put line on loosely, but every now and then I let a twist loop stick out and sure as the world it gets caught on the next cast and I get the bird's nest. Carefully bring it back in untwisting loops and usually rescue it. But every now and then I don't and snip goes several yards off the end (always gathered in and disposed of properly). It doesn't happen all that often, but usually at least a couple of times a day. I have gotten it with Mono, flouro and braid. Pretty much anything is susceptible to it when casting light rigs. Any hot tips from others?

just my opinion...

  1. flourocarbon should never be spooled on a spinning reel... in line reels and baitcasters only
  2. line diameter is more important than any thing else when it comes to visibility... here braid wins hands down

a spinning reel;; by its own design;; will cause line twist.  no getting out of it;; eventually no matter what type of line; or anything;; it will at some point;; start the twist.  some things to help keep it from twisting;; keep a tight as you can retrieve;;  spray a reel oil onto the line;; use new line; often as possible;;  and at the end of each fishing trip;; stretch your line out completely;; in the water if possible;;  re-wind it.  that way  your ready for the next trip out

Everyone has given great tips and they all work. I always close my bails manually and make sure the line is under the roller. I have used spinning reels for years and some mighty nice ones at that. They will all twist your line at some point. One major reason it twists is when you reel against the drag. If a fish is making his run don' t reel why he is pulling drag. That will twist your line every time. Let him run or back reel. I learned a cool trick a few years ago from a bass fisherman on how to get those bird nests out every time. When you get a snarl on the spool after a cast, DO NOT pull it out immediately by hand. Simply loosen the drag quite a bit and then pull it out by hand. It will come out every time. Just make sure you tighten your drag back down after you get the snarl out or your next fish will be a quick release. Don' t ask me how I learned that lesson. Hope this helps.

thats a great tip! and it works

Thank you Maurice for your input. Its something that has to be done religiously we have to do it that way all the time.

Ken/Slip's #1 rule was one I broke most recently and had me head scratching as to how I suddenly was getting rookie snarls again. The flouro is off that reel. Gonna break in some SpiderWire on that reel this weekend.
