I have been using Power Pro 1/8 for years on my ultralites and love it. I use a 4lb. test leader but only because the line is so strong, it is easier to break the leader if I get hung up and I am not constantly cutting back the actual line when changing lures. The actual breaking strength is probably 12 lbs. or more. The 1 lb. diameter line casts like a rocket - much further than 4lb. Trilene Excel. I tried Fireline 1/4 Crystal once but got too many wind knots although their regular 2/6 is a sweet line. Beats mono hands down and I frankly don't understand why more people don't use these lines. The cost is high initially but the line lasts forever although the color might fade which means nothing. I have been using some of my lines for at least 5 years or more with no degradation and I fish alot. I use 2/10 Power Pro in saltwater and have caught redfish up to 12 lbs. with no trouble. I think some of these bass fisherman get the outrageous higher test lines and end up not liking them leading to giving these lines a bad rap but in the lower tests, they can't be beat. Will do.
Will do. I also just got my first-ever baitcasting reel (Abu-Garcia Black Max) and put Fireline on that, too. Practiced a little tonight, but it's hard to do in the dark as a baitcast n00b :-)

I almost got a Shakespeare EZ-Cast but a guy who makes fishing instruction videos on Youtube (he gave me his card and I said "Hey, I know you from YouTube!) said it would be trashed after a few decent bass and recommended the Black Max instead. Seems like a good reel so far.

Spool it up Jonathan.....your really gonna like this line. I'm also a big fan of the 4/1 crystal......probably the best line for spooning on all fronts.

The 6/2 has an actual break strength of close to 10 lbs, and has never failed me.

hey jonathan,

i've used baitcasters plenty for bigger fish, bass, pike, and the like. but if you're looking to throw small lures, less than a quarter ounce, a spinning reel or a spincast reel is the way to go. when trying to throw the smaller lures with a baitcaster, the lure is to lite to get the reel spool moving, and that is what releases the line as you cast. to much resistance to cast far. i had a shakespeare baitcaster many years ago and found it to be worthless for casting…

Good luck and let me know how it works out for you.
I picked up some 6/2 Fireline…tag:bigbluegill.ning.com,2011-07-17:2036984:Comment:1835032011-07-17T10:03:03.992ZJBplusThuyhttps://bigbluegill.ning.com/profile/JonathanByrne
I picked up some 6/2 Fireline Fused Crystal today to try it out. Haven't spooled it up yet, but my first comment is to wonder who's 2 lb. line they think it's the same diameter as? My 4 lb. mono looks thinner to me.

Maybe I've just been living under a rock, but I didn't know you could use braid on a spinning reel.

On a related note, I've been considering trying a baitcasting reel for the first time, to replace a somewhat ailing old spincast reel on a baitcasting rod. Any n00b pointers from those of you using casting gear? Should I use mono or braid? Or flourocarbon?

Anyone familiar with this reel?

i don't expect a lot for that price, but many of the reviewers say the anti-backlash mechanism works and it's a good reel for the baitcasting beginner. I don't know what Shakespeare reels are like nowadays, but I still have and use a Shakespeare spinning reel that I saved up for when I was in 7th or 8th grade (about 35 years ago). It has all of its original parts, still works great, and the only piece of plastic in it anywhere is the drag adjustment knob. I hope they still build reels that way, but wonder if anyone actually does.
I switched to 8lb power pro a…tag:bigbluegill.ning.com,2011-07-13:2036984:Comment:1814102011-07-13T10:10:47.368ZJohn Wileyhttps://bigbluegill.ning.com/profile/JohnWiley

tell me about it being tough,i went trout fishing a few years ago and was a ways from the truck and needed to retie, only i didn't have any type of knife or nippers ,i tried chewing it to no avail, finally had to go ancient old school and beat it with a sharp rock against another larger rock ,it worked but dang it took forever! tried wrapping the line around my arm once to free the line from a snag across the river once, finally got it free,it straightened the hook on my little inline spinner and…
