I've heard of that using a bale of hay trick... Crappie fishermen use to do that in Lake Texoma... worked great. The fish-in-a-bottle thing works too.

I have been using, a very simple method. I mix some powdered coffee cremer with bread bread crumbs and glaric powder. seems to work pretty good.

Another chumming or "baiting" trick I recently heard about is the minnow bottle. This is a large, CLEAR plastic soda bottle poked full of holes. A cord is run through a hole in the cap and tied off inside, so the botle will "hang" in the water. If your chosen bottle has a base cap, you can immerse the bottom in very hot water to loosen the glue holding it on, and then remove it. Most plastic soda bottles no longer use these caps, so try to find one of those.

To use the bottle, put 10-12 lively minnows inside, seal the cap and immerse the bottle in the water you are fishing in. Let your little "aquarium" hang below your boat or suspend it from a another bottle, used as a float - But, dont poke holes in the second one!

The idea is the trapped minnows attract other fish to them, which cannot get AT them. But the distressed baitfish keep up a commotion that holds predatory fishes nearby... where you arrange to keep your baited hook!

When I was a teenager I read a magazine article, the auther wrote about sink'n hay bales to attract fish, said it was a long term trick, as the bale fell apart over time the fish would be look'n for bugs that were in the grass as it was baled.

Never did get around to try'n it myself but it sounds like it could work, but have no idea if a bale of hay will sink or float.

Oh yeah...The dog food trick sounds interest'n, mite have to try that one out.

First things first ... before thinking of chumming... or as we call it in England Ground Baiting... please take the time to find out from local Fish & Game officials whether it's legal or not. The penalties in California are quite severe for illegal practices when it comes to fishing.

I tried it in Michigan several years ago... mashed up some shrimp and meal together with a pint or two of maggotts...... worked very well ... the meal clouds the water a little and when the fish investigate they find small pieces of shrimp and larvae . It really can help keep the Bluegills in the same area for quite a while. But please check first...Tight Lines

I fish with maggots, and they work great. IMO they do require some special tackle. I use spade-end hooks because they are very very thin. I hook the maggot just under the skin at the blunt end and put three or four on the hook. Fish very light. I use a 2# leader and a cane pole mostly with a waggler or very light float.

I grow my own, and I don't have a large scale operation (growing maggots is kinda stinky, and I live real close to my neighbors) so I can't really chum with the maggots, though I know they do in the UK, and I am sure it is a great idea.
Well my brother is going to C…tag:bigbluegill.ning.com,2011-02-22:2036984:Comment:1275222011-02-22T04:40:30.491ZJohnny wilkinshttps://bigbluegill.ning.com/profile/chicagofishing

Well my brother is going to Champaign right now so I could trek down there, pick him up and meet up with you some weekend - he is a fishing maniac too.

I would bring a couple thousand spikes and we can meet somewhere to bank fish!

If you have a local Boyscout troupe I do seminars etc. on the bank. I have done seminars for YMCA & 4H groups - they all do outdoor class activities.

Johnny, I have lots of questions about spikes.I have never fished with them, but seem to be the bait to use. I will message you with questions. I am telling you, you need to come south. All water is open down here. I lve near Carbondale. Dwayne
