I've got many a bluegill night fishing thru the ice. I'll turn the shanty lights on and after a while the gills will funnel in. They are sight feeders, but have extremely sensitive lateral lines. So sensitive, in fact, they can feel the disturbance of a passing fish in the water for up to 5 minutes after it passed. So if you're in a good gill area, when you drop down the hole and jig, combined with the slight wiggle of your spike or waxies, catching gills is quite likely. A full moon and shanty…

A full moon and shanty lights, game on!! Don't know about summer, I competitive bass fish then, I only fish gills thru the ice. Always helpful, Allen.
I've never considered floats for night cat fishing. But, why not? Catfish are predators and always on the prowl. Suspending a deep and shallow hook gang from a large float could be useful.
Walmart you say? Another goodie to buy - - yes!

I've done A LOT of catfishing at night. Some things to think about:

A lighted float. There are a couple different basic types. One type is available at Wally World, and takes two or three button batteries. Those power a LED light. I've got one, and use them for catfish. Really interesting to use. However, I tend to rig them as slip-floats, and have actually thrown one off my line. They aren't a "center-slider" type float; the line clips into a sliding mechanism on the bottom. I also have a "center slider" that unscrews on the top, and you can put one of those lithium-battery LED lights into it. I have yet to use this.... I also use the little rubber sleeves that fit over the top of a slip-float, and you can fit one of those lithium-battery LEDs or a small "glowstick" type of chemical light. Those work nice as well.

On the subject of submersible lights, look around. Some are powered by AA's and AAA's, while the bulk are powered by a 12v battery, and are designed to clip to the posts on a boat battery. I know I saw one model that floats just on top, has the green LEDs underwater, and UV LEDs above water, so that the green light draws in fish/bait, while the UV light helps you to see your line.
Yeah, mike, it's something th…tag:bigbluegill.ning.com,2014-02-12:2036984:Comment:4777572014-02-12T21:43:31.192ZDavid, aka, "McScruff"https://bigbluegill.ning.com/profile/david553
Yeah, mike, it's something that comes up when "alternative" baits are mentioned.
Now, this is just me, but if bluegill are around, they are gonna see whatever comes within their circle of vision. Liver has that wonderful, protein scent that
must surely make a fish want to bite.
And that's the only reason I can think it would get a bite at night. You know I'm now dying to try it!
