Hello everyone just wanted to get your opinions on the best slip bobber for bluegill. I consider myself an experienced fisherman and have never had good luck with slip bobbers. They always get tangled and end up not sliding up my line properly. Any information on which ones and how you set them up would be great.

Thanks and tight lines :)

I am really interested in starting to pour my own soft plastics for crappie and bluegill baits. Also I wanted to start making my own jigs as well. I have never done this before but have a huge interest in it and would love to get started.

I was hoping I could get some useful tips on starting to make both. Whats the cheapest best way to start? Good things to buy? Etc.

Okay so I am 18 years old and just moved out on my own. Im working full time and haven't been able to do what I truly love very often. My passion is fishing I absolutely love it. Growing up I really had no one in my life who was into fishing so how i got into it is beyond me but somehow i got my self obsessed. All I do in the summer months (when im free) is fish. Im talking almost every day I would wake up at 5am to be on the water. If im not actually on the water im watching YouTube videos or reading as many articles and books that I can find on the subject.

If I had to pick a specific target it would have to be bluegill but pan fish in general are what im really into. To be honest though all fish interest me and I hope to one day catch every type of freshwater fish in america.

So what im reaching out to you guys for is some ideas of careers based around fishing. I'm talking anything as long as it has to do with something with fishing. I want to one day do what i truly love as a career. I have thought about trying to become a guide but I'm not in the state where i want to be for that and do not have the experience yet. I also have thought about going the other route and going to school to further help my goal of having a career in fishing. Maybe a fisheries biologist?

I am open to any ideas. College or no college it doesn't matter. I am willing to work very very hard.

I appreciate any feedback and thank you guys so much!

i have seen people that are trying to figure out why they can not cast with the fly rod they bought at walmart for fourty bucks.

i have posted my views on this on this site several times, most people i know that fish gills with fly rods are not packing $100 dollar rods let alone $250 dollar ones.

the fly rod has to load to cast, in an open stream where you can back cast that is not hard to do in most cases.

but in a boat fishing cover we have a problem, this requires the roll cast and to fish under trees where full extension of the rod is not possible ,one must generate line speed with half the rod arc and sometimes a fourth of the rod arc.

here is where the heavy line comes into play, being able to load the rod quickly ,using a violent short cast with my left thumb pushing the handle just above my right hand, like a two handed tennis stroke, you can make a 30 foot cast and keep a tight low roll.

we are talking about combat fly fishing here, it takes a different approach, but one thing is always true the right line can make a cheep rod cast great.

has anyone here tried to over line their rods,if not you are missing out it can make a big difference in your casting .
I miss fishing.. been too long..tag:bigbluegill.ning.com,2013-03-23:2036984:Topic:3656922013-03-23T04:09:38.755ZJoe N.
Well I have bought a license and some simple gear and I am gonna fish again! I really really want to find some local ponds and creeks where I can catch some 1 and a half and two pound fish. I have never really got to do that but one time at my grandparent's boathouse at lake whitney when I was young. caught a HUGE pumpkinseed with hotdog piece. almost 2 lbs..

I live in burleson texas now and have NO IDEA where to go.. if anyone knows of a good lace around here or within a couple hours or so would REALLY appreciate the info! My dad taught me to repsect the places you fish and leave them better then when you came if you find any garbage ect.

I would always follow those guide lines when going somewhere to fish.

Kind Regards

Being a catfisherman, I have to catch bluegills for bait. In Texas, it gets damn hot during the summer, and we have 3 summers - early summer, high summer, late summer, and 2 weeks of winter.

During the hot months, I fish for my bluegills just at dusk and into the night. I use 2" glowsticks, a wine cork bobber with a hole drilled into it, and a bamboo skewer as the line stop. The line is fed thru the hole in the bobber and the skewer slides in to freeze the line in place. The glow…

The line is fed thru the hole in the bobber and the skewer slides in to freeze the line in place. The glow stick is tie wrapped to the 3-4" of skewer. Quite a simple and neat system. Normally I find the gills at 2-4 feet.

It also makes it fun to fish for bait while waiting on cats to bite.

But that was in summer. Last night, Oct 26, on Lake Travis, the bite was slow. Likely I was too shallow at 4', but I'm unsure about how deep they should be. Any ideas on depth for non-ice fishing in 60 deg water?
Long or Short pole?
I am wondering what my fellow Blugillers thoughts are on the rods used? I am finding after 10+ years of being a Bluegill fanatic that I am becoming more selective with the gear I use to fish for gills. I have some formulated opinions based on the way I like to fish but my thoughts on rods are starting to change. Please share your thoughts and reasoning for the rods you use, I would like to hear the opinions of my gill peers....:-)
