My latest batch of quill floats have less paint to show more of the natural quill colors. I used large copper loops to accommodate fly line. I used a satin finish to reduce glare. They are pictured with a vintage Porcupine Quill my father had. No geese were harmed all feathers were molted voluntarily.

I made a few floats from my first crop of ornamental grass/bamboo/reeds I transplanted to my yard summer before last. I painted these but I wish I hadn't, the body material is very slick and the paint doesn't adhere very well. My painting isn't great anyway and having a slick surface didn't help. I will only paint the stems from now on. …

I'd like to make some bobbers for casting with my fly rod for gills, crappies, etc., panfish. Will dowel wood bobbers work? If so I need t know the size, weight, diameter length etc. of dowels I will need and how to turn them into bobbers. I guess the 2-part video by Damon on making dowel bobbers will suffice.

I picked up some large goose feathers at a local lake that has a resident population of Canada Geese. I have been wanting some to make a quill type floats. I found these to be extremely easy and quick to make.

Just cut the feather to the desired length then remove the vanes and barbs by cutting them as close as possible to the quill.

Then take sand paper and sand the quill smooth. Don't just strip the vanes off as you will ruin the integrity of the quill.

I then make an eye by bending a wire around a nail to create a loop. Insert the legs of the eye into the cut end of the quill and glue into place with super glue.

Take thread and whip it around the lower end of the quill just above the eye for about 3/4 in. to reinforce the eye end of the float.

Coat the thread with super glue and let dry and you are ready to fish once you add your keeper. A small rubber band, o ring or tubing will do.
