Nice John…..they are quite aggressive particularly in cold water……I see large schools of the in brackish water…..it’s no wonder the predators are eating so well around here…..

Thanks Jeff I have some 1/32 big eye jig heads I didn't know that there was even a 64th oz or smaller I'll try the smaller stuff hope you had a good trip to the beach!

Hey Mikey-D thanks for the question and sorry for the delay, we had a long weekend at the OBX….I use a myriad of commercial and homemade jigs…….I have favorites for certain times in warm water but in 50 degree water or colder I step down to 1/64th and sometimes 1/80th ounce when bluegill are most finicky…….I’ve done well this winter on a 1/32 ounce Pop-Eye jig for bluegill……it has a #6 short hook which is not wire so I like that….small profile is made for Crappie Magnet by Leland’s….I don’t favor them for crappie where I prefer a longer shank hook…..once it warms I break out their version of 1/16th ounce for many of the bluegill you see during the year…….I’m also grateful to many excellent craftsmen that have allowed me the opportunity to fish their ties some of which are micro sized, 1/64th or smaller….

I forgot to ask Jeff do you have a certain preference of jig brand, style and or weight?

Thanks Jeff we have had some up and down weather here too I will put this info to good use and down size to a #2-#4 light wire panfish hook and the smallest minnows and jig heads I can find. We do have water depths to 28ft in some spots in the lake maybe I will try towards the south end of the lake there are points and drop-offs on that end. As a rule in our lake the north end is shallower and heats up quicker so I usually will hit that side first in the winter but it sure didn't work this time I have a Garmin live scope on my boat and was all over certain brush piles plenty of bait around but no fish even the brush piles that were on the hard to soft bottom transitions maybe it was a case of serious lockjaw but I will certainly put your info to good use next time out   thanks Jeff

Congrats on the winter bass Mikey-D…… I personally don’t enjoy the winter even though coastal North Carolina has been mild except for the big cold snap around Christmas…….nine months out of the year I fish in water six feet or less….for the winter I size down my baits and go deep, that’s a few locations near me that exceed fifteen feet……in my experience the Crappie here require a very cold winter to force them to the deepest water which in my region will stack all panfish together…..meaning I’ve personally done better when we experience a deep freeze often resulting in skim ice upwards of a quarter inch……when our weather is up and down, 72 today and 30 Sunday morning as an example, it becomes a struggle because our fish spread out quickly on mild sunny days……….I’m personally excited on our current path of weather because we will have crappie shallow by the March full moon, 23 years of records and six of those years I caught spawning crappie shallow in February so there’s still a 25% chance that I will have Mardis Gras crappie in the shallows….good luck y’all and wishing you a great fishing year in 2023…….

What are they Jeff? They look like roach minnows I finally got to get out in the lake Monday and Tuesday only caught 2/ 3lb largemouth on minnows couldn't buy a crappie or gill water temp here is 39deg had to break some thin ice in a couple of spots to get out. I am not use to fishing in that cold of water. Do you have any suggestions? I have a 8 rod spider rig on the front of the boat I trolled them very slow and also anchored.
