My "Coppernose" Mount Rushmore for May 2013

The sun has set on May 2013 but not until it went down in history as one of the best May's I've ever had.....traditionally I package my summer vacation every year around the Full moon in June and that is no different this year.......The quality of this year's gills has been better than this time last year.....actually it was 2008 the last time I saw this type of quality....I know Mount Rushmore only has four famous people on it but I couldn't narrow my favorite gills down that far from last…

Pond Management

I have gained access to a small 1/2 to 3/4 acre subdivision pond that is loaded with small gills 3-5 inches, and a few good ones as well.  There are also some hybrid gills, green sunfish, channel cats, bullheads, and bass in this pond. Out from the dam the water is about 10 feet deep. It very rarely gets any fishing pressure to help control the gill population. I have only seen one man and a small boy ever fish it other than my wife and myself. The bass seem to be in all size ranges, with…

Best bluegill taxidermy.

As president of www.bigbluegill.com, I'd like to post some photos of high quality taxidermy involving bluegill, redear sunfish, pumpkinseed sunfish, and other related lepomids.  I will accept submission of taxidermy efforts from taxidermists and anglers who own high quality bluegill or other sunfish mounts.  Please have patience with me.  If you send me a photo on this page, it could take me a week or two to post the photo.  Because of the high value…

Baitholder hooks

I tried some of these tonight and didn't get a single swallow, or gut hook. They were #6.
I was baiting the hook weedless with live worms and just gently moving the worm along. Caught what might be the smallest bass on the planet and a mess of scrappy gills.
No gut hooks. I don't know, maybe it means nothing.

Online beach closure and water contamination nationwide

Whether we're fishing at the salt or in the fresh water, there's always some kind of live notification via the web system, indicating how contaminated the water may be for body-to-water contact. Just sharing with you something that you may like to keep for reference, when you decide to take your family to a freshwater/saltwater beach. The site covers the entire coastal region of the US. Sorry folks, but agencies within the inland states are not providing much info for the system to be…

Beefcake Bluegill Sunfish Hybrid

I had the good fortune to trick a really nice Bluegill / Green Sunfish Hybrid over the weekend here in Nebraska at a certain private body of water.

The water was clear enough that I spotted the fish, and thought, "that guy looks pretty big."

I cast my fly near him and he inspected it but then refused it. I worked him for a while before a small bluegill…

Our Barkley Lake trip

First a little history and then I'll tell you what worked so well for us. I've been looking for a trophy redear fishery to take my family to for quite some time and Barkley Lake's fairly close to where we live at 190 miles. I booked the trip way back in January and have been chomping at the bit to get down there. As the day approached for us to leave, I was wondering if the high water they were having would ruin our trip, not to mention weather being on the cool side. I knew monster redear…

Where to find pre spawn Illinois Blugills

Fished a pond today and caught 20 gills in the 7'' to 8" range. Most gills were shallow but not on beds. Around noon temp was 82 degrees and sunny and fish shut down. They would just look at fly like they were dazed? We caught these fish on fly rod using mostly sz 10 and 12 bead head nymphs. Should i have been fishing deeper water for bigger gills? This pond was only 10 or 12 deep at the most.

Thanks

Frank
