Hey guys and gals... I know this tactic is nothing new, but I think it deserves review. The 'tailgunner' rig for shallow bedding or feeding gills is simply the use of a small, floating crankbait with a short dropper tied to it with a dry or wet fly attached.
We used this simple rig today for over 70 gills over a windy, shallow spawning area and could easily have caught more. We like the small floating Rapalas or the Yo Zuri Tad Fry and a six to 10 inch dropper of 6 lb test lo-vis mono…

I put a few pics on here for you. I got the best pics I could find of other "sunfish" in case you needed a few. Couple of neat photos you have not seen. Keep up the good work, love the site. I promise to start getting seem gills with hook and line and stop cheating with shock boat.

Hey guys and gals, I've been thinking. I know that most of the big gills we see on this site come from smaller, private waters. But I can't help but think that there are overlooked public opportunities for the vast majority of us right under our noses.
Within 1 hour of my house are several small, public lakes that are either county or local park owned lakes that get very little fishing pressure and have a good population of medium to even trophy sized bluegills.
Some lakes…

Just because the Bluegill angler is going after Monster Gills doesn't mean that he or she may find themself fighting the trophy of a lifetime of another fish species (Bass, Catfish, Pike, Pickerel, etc). Since many Trophy Gills inhabit shallow, weedy lakes one may find a large or even trophy size pickerel on the end of their line as these hard fighting fish inhabit similar waters! Larger Pickerel often prefer baits of 3 inches +, subtle and more natural colors in bait selection tend to be the…

Im new to big blue gill.com. It is a really good website to discuss bluegill i have found a lake that has giant bluegill and you can leave with a stringer full of them. Lake Perris, Ca is full of Bluegill all you have to do is find a rock or cover for them in about 10 feet of water and give them a half of nightcrawler or mealworm. Then hold on to your pole !!!!!!!!

First let me say that the weather patterns this spring has got all my fishing water messed up, work has got me so tied down I feel like a sled dog, everybody I know is graduating from some kind of school, and want you to attend,I feel like I have no free time that is not spoken for, and I'm ready for bed, bream bed, that is the only thing I think that can reduce the stress in my life . The backyard will be dry enought to pull the boat up front and get it ready, I've cleaned my rods and tackle ,…

Wow! My 7 year old (CJ) and I headed to a local pond to catch a couple Largemouth Bass for a species contest we entered for the month of May. Little did we know what was about to happen. CJ's first cast hooked a monster 9 inch Bluegill. We then paddled out on the kayak to a spot to fish Largemouth. No luck. I tied on CJ's favorite, a silver Panther Martin spinner. Minutes later he lands a monster 10.5 inch "Gillzilla!" He decides to relish his prize by building sand castles and I head back out…

I just joined Big Bluegill, this site is Great!!!!! I use a size 8# teardrop jig { Blood Red or Orange} tipped with B-Moth. I use Thill bobbers with a nylon bobber stopper. I catch Big Gills in winter or Hot days of summer. My kids enjoy this technique and always have great action. Thanks for all the good information.

Thanks to Big Bluegill member and friend Bob Lusk there are some pictures beginning to filter in of massive tanker bluegills from Richmond Mill!
Here's a couple more. Folks, these are some true behemoths.
Here's Dr. Jim Morgan with a 1-12 bluegill. This fish is very young, with tremendous upside potential.
...and here he is again with a pound-and-a-halfer.…

Hi All -
I've been looking forward to BG Spawning coming up, and I got to wondering where they were already spawning. Realizing its already probably to late in some areas - I thought it would be neat if other posters could chime in with dates they first notice Active Breeding of Bluegill and the general location in the country.
Still probably 3-4 weeks away for me - Who has active, spawing BG right now?

Another great fishing trip stop by a backwater in Alburg this evening because I thought there should have been Seeds there. I Did not catch a seed but I did catch a few perch 2 bullheads and a Northren. I caught that northren with a 41/2 foot ST Croix ultra light rod with 4 pound test line. I still think this area should house some seeds , This fish went after a pearch that Iwas reeling in . I did not have a landing net with…
