Went to check one of my favorite lakes this evening as we had some flooding a couple of weeks ago. Lake level was up three ft but that didn't keep me from finding some of my marked bedding spots. Paddled back to a nice shallow flat where the water was about 5ft, The water had cleared up a lot so I was able to see the nice stretch of craters well before I was on them. Distanced my kayak several feet away and rolled out a cast with a popper dropper rig. Slurp!!! Mr. Bluegill was home. Brought him to hand and measured him, nine inches! Though this could get interesting, so I began to work the outer edges and it was game on. Cast after cast fat thick gills, a few pushing 10 inches, were slurping the popper and dropper down. Managed to bring 22 to hand and lost about six. This was one of the best outings so for this year and of course I left something I usually always have in my vest,,,,my camera, But I would have found it hard to stop and take pictures anyway with them biting that fast and furious. Maybe I can talk one of the kid into doing the photography next time so I can just fish. My own personal photographer! Yeah that would be a great fathers day gift.
Finally wet a hook!!tag:bigbluegill.ning.com,2013-05-01:2036984:BlogPost:3786402013-05-01T02:56:59.000ZRex Robinsonhttp://bigbluegill.ning.com/profile/RexRobinson

With my son's middle school baseball season ending, I actually had some time today to test out a fly that I tied up during the winter months. Got in from work and loaded up the kayak, grabbed my flyrod and headed to my favorite lake that has a good gill population. Saw a few surface smacks as I launched so I had a good feeling my fly was going to be met with approval. Paddled into an area that I knew had beds in the past and rolled out a cast and watched my fly land with a soft splash. Ripples hadn't even settled when my fly was brutally smacked. Mr. Bluegill limbered my flyrod up with a few circles around the yak. And for the next couple of hours I watched bluegill, redears and the occasional bass ingest my fly. So what fly was it? My cricket pattern.
<

I was very thankful and the thought of a bamboo rod project would be just the ticket for the winter months. Put the case in my service car and set out on a day full of service calls, with the thoughts of fishing a vintage bamboo rod filling my head as I drove to and from customer's offices that day. Finally made it home and headed straight to my workshop to see what shape this rod was in. Noticed that instead of two pieces there was three.Only one of which was bamboo; the tip section of the rod. The middle and handle section were fiberglass. Each piece was in very good shape with the eyes all present and even the thread wraps sealed, but still it was not a complete bamboo or a complete fiberglass rod. It was a hybrid fiberboo. The fiberglass rod portion was a Montague rod, so all I could figure was at one time he must of had two rods a fiberglass and a bamboo, broke sections of both and made one rod from the two. So restoring and fishing a vintage bamboo rod is not to be and I was a little disappointed, but like they say "It's the thought that counts".
Nice Fall Morning for Fishingtag:bigbluegill.ning.com,2012-10-20:2036984:BlogPost:3202462012-10-20T19:07:45.000ZRex Robinsonhttp://bigbluegill.ning.com/profile/RexRobinson

I had paddled into some water that was 15 ft deep and started seeing fish and balls of bait fish on my finder. The spoon did it's job and instantly found what was down there. Most were this size and I would pick one up when I swam the spoon through the school of bait fish. Never found any around structure as they seemed to be following the moving schools of bait fish. Tried a few other of my favorite spots in the lake and caught a few of these on my fly rod.Even this big monster that had me scrambling for the netReally like fishing this lake this time of years as I often have it all to myself. It is a small lake and has a lot of shore line structure in various depths and since it is small I seem to take my time and fish every spot more thoroughly. I have caught some of my largest gills out of here .It has a healthy balance of bass, gills, red ears, catfish and crappie. I've had several people tell me that they have fished this lake several times and not caught anything. But these same people scoff at using light tackle and especially a fly rod. I use these techniques and have had great success here. Catfish in this lake will inhale a black leech fly. Gills will destroy a hopper or willow fly emerger. Bass smash a popper and small crank baits. Red ears love the dragon fly patterns and crappie take spoons and spinners. So I guess I'll just have to keep shaking my head in agreement when they tell me there's nothing in here, and just keep this little jewel to myself
Fall Break fishing with the kidstag:bigbluegill.ning.com,2012-10-12:2036984:BlogPost:3173382012-10-12T03:04:16.000ZRex Robinsonhttp://bigbluegill.ning.com/profile/RexRobinson

Tied up some bead eyed dragon fly nymphs in this color pattern to see how they would work. And after a few gills approved of them the cats took a liking to them.Know there's several versions and names for this pattern but as far as I'm concerned I'm calling it the Cat's Meow!!
Itching to gotag:bigbluegill.ning.com,2012-09-14:2036984:BlogPost:3083182012-09-14T22:02:01.000ZRex Robinsonhttp://bigbluegill.ning.com/profile/RexRobinson

Haven't been able to fish in several weekends due to storms and work obligations, but everything is good to go in the morning. Temps have dropped to daytime highs of low 80's and nights in the upper 50's so should make for a good day for the old fly rod and yak. Don't realize how much of a stress reducer fishing is until you've gone a while off the water. Hoping the topwater bite will be on and Mr. frog takes a pounding. Even got a few new patterns I want to try. I am like a kid…

Cut it, place it in some needlenose pliers or wing burner and lightly touch it with a flame. Here are a few samples and some flies I've tied using them.It takes marker well and is fairly durable.
Through the years I have learned that a lot of items labeled "for fly fishing" often cost more than other fishing tackle. The same is true with" fly tying" material. But thanks to the abundance of craft store now a days I have managed to support my habit of fly fishing and fly tying by finding comparable substitutes. I realize there is no substitute for top grade hackle and proper tying thread, but often times synthetic material, beads, foam, glues, and others materials adaptable for fly tying and fishing can be found if you look around in these stores. Even places like walmart and dollar stores can yield things that we as fly fishers and tyers can make use of. Recently I found in the beauty aid section of Walmart, where the travel size item are, a small box very similar to some fly boxes I have seen before. It was only 99cents so I grabbed a couple. They have metal pin hinges, one large compartment, two medium compartments, and three small ones. It measures 4 inches x 2 1/2 inches x 1 1/4 inches so it fits perfect in a shirt pocket. It's even wormproof, as I have stored some small soft plastic baits in it. What more could you ask for, for 99 cents!

Another trip to Hobby Lobby recently yielded a similar find. It was found in the bead and jewelry section. A nine compartment box for $3.99. It might be bought for less as they often have 30% to %50 off on certain craft items on certain days. These measure 4 1/2 x 4 x 1 1/2 inches. They allow you to see your flies without opening each compartment. They are apparently wormproof as the rubber legs on my flies have not melted and I have used these for several months and have been in the heat recently. These fit perfect in cargo pockets on shorts and pants which helps save space in the kayak.

I just thought I'd share in case some of you are looking for some cheap storage ideas. Let me know of things you have adapted that aren't labeled "for fly fishing". I figure they're some good mind with some good ideas on here so share the wealth of knowledge.
