About me

Big Bluegill is a very informative website with lots of great people. I admit that I generally do not target Bluegill because I enjoy catching different species of fish. I also do not usually target Largemouth unless I am bored. Species I enjoy targeting the most are Spotted Bass, Smallmouth, Rock Bass, and Pickerel. A couple of species I have recently started to target are Gar, Bowfin, and Muskie. I plan on doing Northern Pike soon.

I have caught nearly every significant North American species of sunfish with the exception of Pumpkinseed and a true Longear Sunfish.

Sunfish species caught: Bluegill, Redear, Redbreast, Warmouth, Flier, Rock Bass, Roanoke Bass, Crappie, Green Sunfish, and Spotted Sunfish

Black Bass (Sunfish family): Largemouth, Smallmouth, and Spotted

As far as bait and lures go, I generally use a 3:1 ratio of live bait to artificial.

I use a variety of rods depending on the targeted species: usually a light rod for sunfish; light or medium for bass or pickerel; and heavy for bowfin, gar, and pike. I do not own any fly rods. All of my rods have an open-face reel except for one heavy bait caster.

Appomattox River

I've got this one spot along the Appomattox River where I have caught an incredible amount of different species of fish. That's an incredible 10 species at just one spot! Further downstream I have also caught Fallfish, Smallmouth Bass, and Bluehead Chub. Total of 13 species in the vicinity of Amelia, VA and Petersburg, VA. I'm fairly… Continue

Hope for a good fishing year

Well, I made it back to Big Bluegill! Last year I just didn't have much time to fish due to other obligations. This year should be different though! Wishing everyone a great season!
