I got mine at Kmart, Carl.

Its got "South Bend" on it, but its just a China piece. I couldnt find a picture of it EARLIER, but it lacks the compass shown on the pic. This makes it even handier. It spans up to 8 pounds and HERES A PIC:

Ive verified it using known weights as Ive said, and its accurate enough. I run the grinder against the hook to give it a little pointy-point, but I cant ever leave well enough alone.

not bad David; and a trim small unit is really what I prefer.  I have  a spring type scale for the bigger fish;; just looking for one for the blue gills...

Marty,

This is the one I tote in my vest:

Its small and is always on hand. Ive tested it with known weights up ti fove pounds and it is accurate enough. If it tells me Ive caught a 4.5 lb blluegill, I know its time to head to the nearest ramp and call a DNR agent!

For everything else its accurate enough.

And I dont risk losing it, cause I always have my vest.

I usually have one of these in "the other" tackle box I don't have with me.

Trophy bluegills.
What is this mythical creature?

Sure, it all comes down to how accurate you want to be. If eating the fish is the ultimate goal, then a mechanical scale that's intended for bigger fish, and is off by a 1/4 pound is just fine. I wouldn't buy a digital for those occasions myself.

But when the details matter, digital is my choice. And not just any digital either....if the scale is rated for 50 lbs, how accurate is it going to be on the low end of the scale, when weighing an 8 oz bluegill? I use a postal scale, rated for 10 lbs max. To be sure it is bulky, but, I don't normally travel with a scale either.

I'm with David, in that fishing for supper doesn't require an accurate scale. But when you cross over into big bluegills, catch and release bluegills, trophy bluegills even......ounces count. A cheap, digital kitchen scale from Wal-mart will do a pretty good job, and not break the bank.

I've tried the same sort of thing, although a different name.
You know what? You can keep those digital scales, like that Berkley.
For me, they are too bulky. For you, in man large boat with lots of storage it may be no worry.
But I prefer the smaller, if somewhat inaccurate, spring scale. Truth is, although my wife insisted I get it, this one Ive shown here won't get used much.
I can see where some guys want to measure every little thing, and the micro subtleties will matter.
But I'm not worried about an ounce or two on a bluegill. If it's big enough to bother with, it won't be retaining much weight for very long!

has any body looked or tried a Berkley digital one yet??  just saw one at wally world for around 20 bucks;; looked good to me ; but what is any body else;s oppinion

Tony is right on the digital. Pro Tournament digital scales are a must. Rapala handheld is good on the go. But the kitchen and mail type is much better. A bit of fiddling with a fish's holding tray will payoff in the long run.
