Rudy......One just plain has to be "fast" with the camera I guess and the fish has to be photographed "right"out of the water...no lolly gaggin here...lol!..I found just from experience that the longer the fish sits that the fins relax and "fold up" next to the body....A little "trick" I found is to press your finger on the side of the fish (gently) and the pressure causes the fish to "raise or expand" it's fins once again...gotta be fast as they relax them again....by then you should have got the photo.....Works for me!...

How did you get the gill to open up its fins for the photo? When I take a photo of a gill it never realy wants to open them up for the cam. "Great Photo."

I would like to add that I am truely amazed at the size and consistency of the numbers of high quality bluegills you guys are catching, especially for such northern waters. Here in the Mid Atlantic region, I consider any gill 10 inches or better to be of trophy status, and if you are catching 9 inchers in numbers, well, then you have an excellent fishery on your hands! Plus, these all apppear to be pure, northern bluegills with coloration litterally unmatched. The fish are thick and heavy, and I'll bet taste great as well!

I might even add that I am a tad jealous, too. But I certainly shouldn't be as I have been blessed with alot of high-end panfish waters in my region.

Good stuff, guys!

Apparently....after getting input from across the country.....the gills I'm hooking are "right up there" with the best of em......I guess I would never have known that....After all I've never "wet a line" in any other state but Minnesota (well except Canada for lake trout and walleyes) Just "flip of the coin" lucky that these lakes around my area are good natural producing gill lakes.....what's amazing is more then one lake has gills close to these sizes....and thanks Walt for your input!....

Agood lake for big gills up in this neck of the woods is Pelican Lakein Orr, Mn.....Had property there 35 years ago....It's the lake that actually got me started into flyrodding for those big gills.....Pelican was actually really known for crappies(which it still is) but the bluegils are certainly there also....the lake is "no secret' for sure as it covers thoudsands of acres in size...a good lake!

A 2 pound + bluegill might be in these local waters (say within 50 miles) but that's like finding a 6 ounce gold nugget in your back yard....don't think that's going to happen laws of averages kind of thing(for me anyways)...lol!......never say never is the old saying but only trying to be logical .......probably a 55 pound northern lurking the waters up in this neck of the woods but don't think I'd bet my next check on it.....lol!...guess it's what is the driving force for some people to 'hit the lakes' each weekend.......mine is just to feel that nice sized gill trying to pull that flyrod out of my hand!...lol!
