I believe they are black soldier fly larvae. They are great for compost. The carry no diseases and aid in the breakdown of compost. And if you use them for bait you probably will never run out

I say it doesn't matter as long as they don't sting or stink, and the fish eat them.

But  dont think that they are crane fly larvae either. I did a little research and Im pretty sure its not fly larvae, at least not the crane fly. I would like to find out what they are though. I did originally think that they were fly larvae by them being in my compost. But so far my research havent told me beyond the shadow of a doubt what they are

Those are not mealworms, they look more like Crane Fly larva.  But whatever they are, I'm sure they work great as panfish bait!
