Bluegill - Big Bluegill

Do you love big bluegill?

I got some #18 hooks and had a go at some basic dry flies.

Im telling you, this is the lower size limit.
Waaaay fiddly and basically overkill for bluegill.
Joe Angelucci, I admire you more, now.

Well, Dick, in the immortal words of Dirty Harry, "A mans got to know his limitations."

Thanks McScruff. Magnifiers I got and lights I got but with these weary old eyes I know my limits. Best I can do is possibly a #12 hook.

Dick,
With magnifiers and bright light, it's doable. There's also a sense of accomplishment once completed. Im told, too, that the skills developed with these makes tying bigger flies that much easier!

Nice flies McScruff but well out of my comfort zone I can't see anything that small so have fun.

Well, if you say so, Joe, that's enough for me!

Nice thing about small hooks is that you are more likely to hook on the lips. I fish 14 to 32 most of the time  and I only had 2 deep hooks out of 800 + fish. Key is to watch the line and not wait to feel a strike . That's why I use indicators on the line so I can see side to side as well as up and down.

Tootys right - these are tiring to tie.
After these three, I was done.
Very tedious. But the look just screams, "eat me!"

I'm thinking I'll tow them 18" behind a gurgle spider, Jim. What do you think?

Joe, I'm sure they'll catch. My one worry is hook swallowing.
