Bluegill - Big Bluegill

Do you love big bluegill?

One of the biggest things that our local fish have to overcome is a strong North/Northeast wind during the spawn.....Although rare, it does happen as I witnessed today ...The water is down almost a foot right now with a passing cold front and this can be troubling.......You can even see the beds closest to shore isolated already.......This stretch had 78 rings and some were upwards of 24 to 30 inches wide.......Fish were active and some big fish were still working hard to protect the shallow beds as I caught a few pictures with them busting.......Hopefully our prevailing southwest winds will return and cover these active nests up.............

Indeed they will TK........the gills on the Albemarle stage early May and start working in advance of the Full Moon.......by the Full moon in June they are on the working beds and will return in July and even August in some cases........I saw fish on 11 different beds yesterday while fishing in two creeks............low water and calm winds gave many of them away as they were breaking and slapping in the shallows...........I still get excited to this day when I see gills on the nests.............
