HI Jim, I got an In Fisherman magazine yesterday. 2 pound Bluegills article is very nice!!!! I am glad that you write about to let big bluegills back to the water for the future trophy bluegills! Keep up good work!
Hey Jim,
I soked up the article in In Fisherman today and thouroughly enjoyed it. I appreciate how you presented Gill fishing in the article and thought it represented us Gill Getters very well. I also thought you approached conservation in a very tasteful way. We all love to eat Gills and we all want to catch that 2+ lber. but that won't happen if we don't take care of the resource and practice a little catch and release. After reading the article I was proud to be apart of the Bigbluegill.com community. Thanks for being a good abmassador for our sport.
Hello,
I was inquiring about a guy who i used to buy jigs from that were for crappie and panfish. Another guy Bill "Musky" I think it was suggested that I ask you. The guys name was Zig and he made some really nice little panfish jigs.
Jim,
Thanks for the reply and info. I will take your advice and try to get in touch with him the way you suggested.
As far as the crappie and bluegill go I am still a novice as most of my experience has been in Salt water. I do get a kick out of sticking a cricket on a hook and toss im in the shallows and watch as the bobber moves around and then goes under. lol For some reason I want to do this more and more. The crappie have been very elusive to me as I have not been very successful. YET
So, You guys are fishing for crappie when it is cold? Huh? I have only been fishing for them when spring to fall. Maybe I need to get out there when it is colder.
hey jim, i was on my way to baltimore the other day when i saw a sign for tuckahoe state park. i was wondering if you ever fish there, and what you thought about the park. is it tidal water or fresh water? well please respond when you get a chance, and as always good luck on the water.
mike
It's an honor to have you as a 'big-bluegill friend'. I just re-read your article on 2-lb bluegills in In-fisherman. You mentioned that live bait is best for monster gills. While I agree whole-heartedly with that statement, I pretty much only fly fish when I go after 'gills. What flies do you think are best when pursuing 'gillzilla'? Lately, I've been doing well with my go-to fly....a #6 olive woolly bugger. I've also done quite well with the 'popper-dropper' set up, opting for a flashback beadhead rubber-leg pheasant tail or hares ear as the dropper and a white Betts popper. Any suggestions on other fly fishing rigs?
ive caught some good gills thanks to your article in in-fisherman and am addicted to fishing for gills with fly tackle like brian voss below though my fish have been hiting a black #6 wolly bugger cant get more fun than that im hoping to surpase the 1 pound mark this year i saw one fish this year that looked like it could eat a duck so im out to catch him
Good morning Jim! Hope all is well! School has started for me now and, well, the fishing has taken a backseat if you will. Hope to get out a couple of more times. Take care!
Hey Jim, I was going through Google and noticed an article you wrote for "In-Fisherman" magazine entitled "HOOFIN' IT FOR CRAPPIES". Don't know how long ago you wrote it, but it was very informative. One of the topics you touched on, was your favorite choice of colors and plastic baits. One in particular that I noticed, was pink. I handpour my own 1 1/2" jigs and tubes, and I have "bubblegum pink" dye for the plastic. Would this be an acceptable pink for crappie? Please let me know what you think. Thanks, Nick Holt.
4 sure Jim, check out the new post on bobber revoulution. i posted something about bobbers you might like to know, and that i would like to share with you.
Thanks for your comments Jim. We have been doing good up shallow against the flooded cypress the entire month of June. Its amazing how many big largemouth bass hit crickets in these Northeast N.C. rivers. I enjoy your comments and photos Jim. Good luck on the water.
I truly believe they are Jim. Its a little intimidating to figure out the miles and miles of river systems around here. What works in one doesn't work as well in another. But I feel that fishing 12 rivers and associated creeks gives me a great shot at some awesome Gills. Today was a perfect example. The weather was terrible last night and into the morning! I have places where the bite completely stops with a northeast wind not to mention a passing cold front. I told a neighbor @ noon I was going to try an area I had been watching and it paid off. I caught the fish pictured today in the NOON DAY SUN with temps in the low 90s. Thanks for your previous comments as well. It can get confusing but there are several Little Rivers in North Carolina and I fish the one in the Northeast. Your son was probably down by Goldsboro. I have never fished Atkinson Mill Lake but here good reports of quality bass but no feedback on Bluegill. It certainly seems like it would be good, not far from Richmond Mill either.....Good chatting and I really enjoy your knowledge and information.
you know what a pumpkinseed sunfish is right? well this pond i go to its full of them, bluegill, bass, and hybrid bluegill. he insists tat there is not one pumpkinseed in that pond and pumpkinseed have a dark orange gill plate. if you look at my picture you can see the differences between a hybrid and a real pumpkinseed
Just think Jim, in a few months all the talk will be about Ice Fishin', Mother Nature rules! It is brutal in Carolina as well....Big Time Heat Wave. Be careful if you get out Sunday and you guys caught some nice Carp today......
Jim we catch White Perch upwards of two pounds here in Northeast North Carolina. I had two over a pound today out of the five I caught. The state record is 2 pounds 15 ounces and we all believe that it can be broken in the Albemarle Sound region. Tasty little fish and I caught the fish today on crickets while fishing Gills. Thanks for the question.
Jim I'm putting together a chart and a narrative of the last couple years for the Northeast North Carolina region and I will then work out getting it to you for an initial review. Then I figure I can answer/edit things as needed. Thanks again for considering my region and look forward to assisting in any way I can.
That will not be a problem at all. I have good data for everything including the fishing reports. Our rivers are beautiful and North Carolina does a great job with providing public access too include handicap friendly whcih I feel is awesome for those folks. I will include the website for all Public North Carolina Boat Ramps as well as public piers and parks for bank fishing. More to follow soon.
H Jim John Sheehan said to talk with you about perch. Will you please check out my post on fall perch fishing I would really appreciate any input you might have.
Hey Jim. I LOVE to fish Piney Run for just about anything - it's just the lake is really picking up steam as a good LM and striper lake so the boating crowd is aweful! You can really pull some nice gills out of 20 feet or so of water the pretty consistantly. My kids love it! I used to have a few 'secret ponds' to go to when i was a kid but times have changed and now I take my 4 kids primarily on Liberty. Harder to find the bite there for gills and everything else. We try. Great time of the year upcoming - good luck out there.
Come on down - we should have real good fishing for another 4 weeks. Lake is closed on Tues & Weds now - state park, no budget. All you need is air fare (Ontario airport) - you can crash at my house. Could try some night fishing for cats & crappie also.
Need to get Pat & Bill out here - they would go crazy here with the spoons.
I have an appointment this week to determine if another surgery is going to help. I'm still off work for another month.
You can probably get enough stuff for a couple of articles....
Cool - fishing has been really good right now. Losing a lot of jigs, because of the stumps and the reefs we are fishing, but the pay off is worth it. Been catching some big BGs in between everything else. Can't fish crawlers here, for the REs, because you will get CCs and Bass. Been watching the Bass chase trout down. Some guy caught a big striper on Saturday fishing for trout.
I can only fish for a few hours in the morning now and that is if someone takes me - because of the meds I'm taking. Me or Jim haven't fished the late bite in a long time - which I think is better. We caught more big BG in the afternoon.
Jim, i have been fishing a lake close to home that has proved itself to have large bluegill and red ear. they have a 15 fish limit on the lake. i am having trouble catching a limit. all of the fish are 10 inches or better that i catch but i cannot find any numbers. the lake is deep with steep drop offs. just wondering if you had any suggestions?
Jim, I too agree that this is a rare body of water. i have no intentions of loading up for a fry, i just want my boy to have a good day on the water. i am teaching him how to cull fish in our pond to manage it for large gills. in my pond and in any body of water i believe that one takes a picture of 10 inches and up. we cull 6 1/2 to 8 inch for a good gill fry. this lake used to be loaded with large bluegill, but they have stocked it every year for the past 15 yrs with rainbows and the panfish are disappearing. we just cannot catch any numbers.
Thanks for the advice Jim, I do hope my son and I can catch some lunkers this year. I know we will we usually always end up with several 10 +. It is sad that people do not appreciate true trophy size bluegill.. I firmly believe that over tens and over need to be released, hey, I think the smaller ones taste better myself. i am managing my second pond, we just had it put in two years ago, i feed religiously and i already have some really nice gills, but i will not start harvesting any bluegill for another three years. i want to get a good base in there, and i want to grow the monsters i had before. i raise the coppernose here in Ohio. Lots of folks do not believe they will live through a northern winter, but i have had no trouble with the. good luck this year jim catch a trophy or two. i will send you some pictures in the future. nice talking with you James Sampson
Jim, I am not getting into any fish. We went from Unseasonably warm to unseasonably cold. It has been outright frigid at night with heavy frosts for the last week and a half, and temps in the mid twenties. we did catch a few Hybrid stripers out of our pond but that is it.
Thank you Jim. The lake I went to is special to me and although I know there are lots of big gills there I never connected but instead of letting the day go on with little or no success the Crappies were more than eager to please.Again thank you and I did truly have a blast.GOOD FINSIN to you Jim.

Sorry it took so long for me to get back to you, yes, Marsh Creek is still as good for gills as ever,
Fish the hump down near the dam during the summer months, lots of wooden cribs on the 20 ft hump, small jigs tipped with a wax worm works well.
