Got a report of bull bream being caught down in Black Creek with worms on the bottom in 12 ft water. I know the area so headed down Monday to give it a shot, but taking the mullet gear just in case.
good luck, let us hear how you do. i have fished black creek some, havent never done real good on it. Didnt do good nowhere last year come to think about it. Hope you fill the boat up
Trip today after gills did not work out very well. The river had risen considerably from last Friday. The was was muddy and racing through the gill target area. Fished for only about 30 minutes and pulled out.
The only thing I can suggest for bank fishing along 30A is any of the dune lakes where you can gain public access. Check with the Grayton State Park and see if bank fishing is available on Wester Lake. Also, Topsail State Park has a couple of very nice lakes that hold bass and bream. At Topsail you can wade fish around the shoreline but a canoe or yak is probably better. Watch for the occasional gator is you are wading. The Ranger can tell you more about how to fish those lakes. I think they may have special rules about fishing but I don't what they might be.
I hope you don't mind that I joined your group? I'm actually in Central Fl on the Harris Chain but I travel up your way to fish alot Suwannee, Chipola, Waccissa and some other rivers and lakes. I have several fishing/camping trips planed up there for this year it's pretty up there.
Not at all Lee, very glad to have you. Actually it's good to have a contact down in your area. I have read about th Harris chain all my life but nevery fish down there.
This week the Chipola, Apalach, and Choctawchee Rivers are in a huge flood stage. Fishing the Choctaw has been poor for past couple of springs and all the guy have their fingers cross that this flood will help out fishing a great deal.
About t 3 or 4 years ago when we had the same condition and that spring you could drop a cricket in a mud hole and get a bite. I'm primarily a bream guy but switched to other pursuits when the bit became so difficult, Right now I'm into mullet snatching and doing very well.
This will be my first year fishing the lakes around tallahasee where they actually have some water in them. I've enjoyed the last few years and actually figured out how to catch fish in low water times. It usually involved dragging my yak to a hole others wouldn't tread. Lakes that were 20 to 100 acres are now 10 to 100 times that. Suggestions now that the lakes are full? How long will it take for the fish to populate that much water.
I'm thinking late summer before the gills are thick in our lakes.
I'm not sure on your question. Maybe one of the guys over there who fish the lakes can help out. I know when Jackson came back up it didn't take but a few months for good fishing. Now the sinkhole has opened again and drained a lot of water out.
Iamonia is at full pool. Jackson and carr are up several feet. I'm taking the bass more seriously this year because of a online contest. Caught 8 yesterday. The biggest 19 3/4". Looking for one in the 25" range. Still love to catch the panfish for the table. With the cold weather jigging is not working for me in the shallow lakes.
Rhoden cove is still closed. Its 50 yards to the water. Kayaks only. Jackson only came up a few feet. Boats are launching from hwy 27.
I caught a bigun tonight 24 1/4" for KBF. Next week I'll try for panfish again.
With Iamonia at full pool I assume you can get a jon boat in there now? I know low water you need a yak, go-devil, etc to get around with all the pads and grass. Sister was here this week and I'm going over to see her in a couple of weeks and drag my G-3 jon along.
Finally targeted bream but without a lot of expectations. We didn't expect much but just wanted to get out of the house and on the water.
Went down to Pinelog yesterday with Freddy, one of my fishing buddies. Pinelog was high but water clear all the way down to East River. Fished from 9a to 3p. Only one other boat there all day. The catch as one 12 inch bass, one 12 1/2 inch shellcracker, and one 9 inch red breast. We missed maybe 2 or 3 bites. That was it.
Too the opportunit to explore East Rive a little since neither of us knew much about it. Just up the river a ways from Pinelog intersection there is an old wood bridge across the river. It's non-useable now. It was very well made and probably used to truck logs many years ago. Looked like a heck of a crappie spot when river is down. Water was 10 ft with the high river so no sure what it will be in normal times.
River is still all over the swamp and running well. We got more rain today with some up in Alabama. Hopefully this will kee the river high for a while longer.
Living in a desert in Aguila, AZ, poles leaning on cactus. Very sad. Wishing everyone well, and leaving the group. Catch mine for me, please. Tight lines, screaming reels.
Thanks for the report J.B. I fished in the rain today and slew the crappie. I must of caught close to 50. Kept 8 small ones. I caught 16 over 12" for a web contest I'm in.
Everytime it rained the bite would turn on and it rained alot.
Heck of a report there Tim. You must have been in a lake. River fishing over here is not producing much right now. I think I need to hit Lake Juniper a couple of times until the river gets more fishable.
I'm going to be fishing Talquin and Oklocknee River area on Tuesday and Wednesday of next week. Only been on Talquin twice and that was years ago.
I don't really know anythng about the place so looking for any recommendations on what areas to try. I'm not a spider crappie guy or know trolling so plan to plug a little fo bass and drop shot for bream and crappie. I do have some decent electronics on the boat.
Hope somecan point me in a direction that will give me a start.
Finally managed to catch a decent gill or two. Feels like it's been eons since the last catch. Spent 3 days fishing Fish Pond Drain area at Lake Seminole last week. First two days were just getting a feel for the area by exploring and a little fishing. The third day we found a bream hole but had only a couple of hours to fish. That was enough to put 23 bream/gills and 3 crappie in the cooler.
Headed down to lower Choctawhatchee River tomorrow morning for mullet and a little bream fishing. Got a report they are hitting well in upper river area near Geneva.
Went down to lower Choctawhatchee River on Tuesday looking for mullet and bream. Mullet still not back in their usual holes. I did snag one along with 4 large shad. Met up with a buddy at the mullet hole. We decided to try for bream. He went to Wildcat and I went up to Watermelon. Neither of us found much to speak of.I think I caught 6 or 7 three/four finger size and released all. Watermelon as full of fish according to the sonar. I figure they were spawning shad based on a conversation with a friend who knows the river ways better than I. Bad weather all this week will keep me home, but plan to get back out there on Monday after the weather clears up a bit.
Finally caught a few bream yesterday in the Williams Lake area of the Choctawhatchee River. 8 big enough to keep and about 15 tiny things.
Saw a good number of boats on the water but most were after striped and hybrid bass and reds which are feeding on shad right now. Best time for them is at the crack of day you need to be in the river delta are with hook in the water.
Week after next headed by to Lake Seminole for another week and see if we can find some more of those big bluegills like we caught last month.
Finally after many months of high water the Choctawhatchee River is just right. It's been right for a few days. I got out today and put 31 good eating size in the box, but no bragging size.
A good many boats on the water and everyone I saw were after bream. Sorry, not photos. Forgot to take the camera.
Yesterday limited out on bream with a buddy.100 in the box. No, we didn't clean them all but some neighbors did and they are happy. The bite is red hot this week on the Choctaw. I believe full moon is Friday of this week. Here is a slide show if it works. That my buddy Freddy holding the titty bream. I'm the other guy
J.B. thart is the best mess of fish i have ever seen come off choctaw, What in the world did you use for bait. I think im goin to take off work friday and go. Nice catch
Hi Clint. Crickets, crickets, crickets. The Choctaw has been crazy since middle of last week. Drop a hook on the edge of an eddy and fast water in 4 to 5 ft water is where they are. Had two reports today from others who limited out yesterday below Cowford. I'm going tomorrow with a bass guy, but I'm taking my bream rod and crickets to work the shore line. Also plan to go Friday for bream only. Will be working out of Smokehouse. My suggestion is work from Big Sister upriver to Cowford, but I'm hearing they are biting just about anywhere you go.
thanks for the info J. B , joey and I went friday had a good day, windy but we still had over 40 hand size bream all on crickets. had a good time, it was nice to have a cooler full of fish
That was a good cartch Clint. Yes, it sure is good to get a few to make a trip worthwhile as well as getting enought to have a good fish fry.
I went on Wed after the Monday we limited out. Got 2. Was with a bass guy and you can't fish bass and bream at the same time worth a flip. You move too fast to let a cricket soak a while. Then went the following Friday afternoon to Comanders near Red Bay and got only 5. I think the bite may be better down around Ebro and below. I think it's slowed but still good from all reports. Will give it a shot this Wednesday and see.
My cousin, dad, and uncle just got back from two days over on Choctawhatchee, brought 1000 earthworms and 1000 red worms and spent two nights on a sandbar, final count, 286 bream, dad said out every ten bream, three or four them were at least 1/2 lb shellcrackers, all bream caught on the bottom tightlining. They limited out on the first day by 2:00, cleaned fish that evening, second day they fished until 3 pm before they had to get everything together and head back, bream is on fire over there right now!! Bonus they did get 29 channel cats plus two sheepshead, very productive trip for them.
t picked this up a few minutes ago from the Pensacola Fishing Forum:
Have a few days off this weekend, might try a little fly fishin in the dead lakes, havent heard of any reports from over there, last trip was a bust. I have had good luck also on the trips this year on the choctawhatchee, havent tried any tightlining this year but with that report i might better
Clint.....WEwa area might be good. On the Choctaw it's sort of hit and miss for really good catches but folks are still doing pretty good on bream. Bass is rather poor. Mullet improving. Got 17 nice big blacks on Tuesday.
fished above hwy 20 wednesday afternoon, caught 33 bream on flies, some were real nice in size, having problems loading pictures or i would let you see them
Thanks Clint, I'm headed down that way this afternoon. Had planned on Simplers but may hit the Cowford ramp. There is a bass tournament there tomorrow so the river will be full of race boats.
Got down to Cowford and headed upriver. First stop, my trolling motor would not steer correctly and it was running backward. Recently I hit a steel water depth gauge at Comanders Landng which is in the wrong place. Trolling motor head housing was busted. Replaced it which required unhooking wiring. To make a long story short yesrerdy I found the polarity was hooked up backward was the reason the motor ran backward. Anyway, the trip was cut short due to these difficulties and a rain storm came up. The river is rather dirty and up a little but there were maybe a half dozen rigs in the parking lot when we got there at 3PM.
Hi Joey.... that was worth the trip. I'm headed to the Choctaw in the morning but not sure for bream or mullet. Will check the radar before I leave to see what weather is looking like.
Clint: Coincidentally I crossed the river at Caryville about an hour ago and stopped at the landing. It's muddy as all get out and on the rise.
