    Pickerel Lures:

  • John Sheehan

Chris -Whats your personal best ?Mine is a 25" in a small Ringwood NJ pond .Where's Ice Warrior Gill?He caught a fantastic 28.5 in New York State. On a32nd oz .jig. I've gotten them up to maybe 16" on small jigs at Shepherd lake while fishin' for gills, but my 20" and over come on Spoons ,Cranks, and Jersey Rigg and Yum worms. Live Shiners on tipups thru the ice. .
  • chris

my best is 24.5 in a pond about 1.5 acres it was about 4 pounds
  • Jim Gronaw

Pickerel fishing is cool, and lots of opts in many areas that most don't fool with. I just got back from a father/son trip from Richmond Mill and Matt and I both landed our best ever pickerel...his was 23 inches and mine was 25. We had another at 24 inches. I got the 25 on a 1/32 oz hairjig and 2-pound test fishing for bluegills! Crazy!

  • John Sheehan

Congrats to you Matt Jim! Any Pik 20 and over is great in my book ...25" great! Great to see you here .Knew it was only a matter of time!
  • CLIFFORD WILLIAMS

i have never caught one but i have been trying need help
  • John Sheehan

Clifford -I see you're from Virginia . Do you have Chain Pickerel ,Grass Pickerel and Red fin Pickerel there? I only catch chain Piks up here in NJ. I saw what I thought could be a Redfin Pickerel once but didn't have a pole.
  • chris

    clifford,
i would try shiners shallow about now... i have heard of people catching piks in the southern us in the colder monts

also something for every one to think about, the all tackle world record is 9lb 6oz caught in Homerville, Georgia on February 16 1961... just something to think about
  • Jim Gronaw

That 9-6 is an astounding, long-standing record. Anything over 4 is noteworthy and citation sized in most states. A 5 or 6 pounder is exceptional just about any where. MD record is 7 lb 9 oz. and PA record is 8 lbs. 8 oz...one of the largest on record.

Virginia has good pickerel fishing in the Chickihominy River and in tide water lakes region around Suffolk...Lake Burnt Mills, Prince and Cahoon.
  • John Sheehan

    Here are New Jersey records

Pickerel, chain 9 /3 1957 Frank McGovern Lower Aetna Lake
Pickerel, redfin 1 /13 1982 Gerald Humphrey Lake Assunpink
  • John Sheehan

One 19" Pickerel on 1/4 oz. Acme Flashking Flutter spoon at Gatun Pond the latest in the year I ever fished this pond!11/24/10.Fished the four Glasmeres nothin.
  • Jim Gronaw

Hey John...Pinchot Lake, 20 miles south of Harrisburg has giant pickerel. I think I'm gonna keep fishing it until ice up, it has crappie that have gone 19 inches and pickerel to just under 7 pounds. Big snakes to 28 inches are not rare here. Yesterday I got 50 crappie there, all 9 in and under, and saw another angler with that many but he kept 8 or 10 big, 12 inch plus slabs, including one over 15 inches.
  • Florida Boy

Thanks for the tips yall they paid off nicely

  • chris

what did you get it on
  • Florida Boy

Live shiner on a slip float rig
  • Florida Boy

Still havnt been able to get up to the bass pro and get some of those little cleos soon hopefully
  • John Sheehan

Very Great Pik MC! How big?I'm guessing over 25" and more than 4lbs!!
  • Florida Boy

He was right around 27" :)
  • Howard Webster

Iced fished today first time in 2 weeks .  The snow dropped down to where I could get out that deep crap kills my back.    We were fishing perch from the shanty in about 10 feet of water could clearly see bottom and I had a N. pike that would have gone well over 10 pounds that small hook on a #1 swedish pimple did not hold her, It was fun for a few moments
  • chris

its almost huge pickerel time here in ct... we just need loose the 25 inches of ice we have up here
  • Howard Webster

does any one go after these toothy fellows with a flyrod on here
  • John Sheehan

Chris does I believe .Chris ,hello you there ?Must be fishing Howard!
  • chris

i do go after them with the fly, i have had luck with divers and clouser minnows.

john- i wish i was fishing but i had to go to school :(
  • John Sheehan

Hoping to try that myself for the 1st time this year Chris .For Pike also Howard!
  • chris

its a lot of fun having such a quick fish rip the line out of your hands
  • Howard Webster

up north here we have some smaller lakes that house chain pickerel.   I have had them hit my bobbers while fishing for sunnies and perch so i am going to tie up some Bass bugs and give them a try with the fly rod I have a 8 foot orvis 8 wt that should work fine
  • chris

    howard,

i have had that same thing happen to me.  so i cut a slit in a bobber and epoxyed a hook in it.  i have landed a few pickerel like that.  i will find the bobber and take a picture of it for you guys.  also the pickerel should destroy the bass bugs :)

  • Howard Webster

These are some I have tied to try saw the patterens on you tube and enjoyed tying somthing i can see again.
  • chris

howard, those look wonderful.  don't be surprised when a big northern slams one of them
  • John Sheehan

Go Howard .I gotta try fly rod Piks and Pikes this year!
