Still small pics there Mike. Very impressive fish. Just wish we could get a better look at them. Shoot me a message and I think I can help you get the size fixed.
Well theres a fella up around you growing hog bluegill i wish i could get my hands on.. I got a little taste of them but not nearly what i need.. Hopefully he remembers me this year?
Gotcha. Yes, I am very fortunate to live in such close proximity to Dr. Bluegill. Even more blessed to see him give my son pointers and my wife catch a nearly 10" HBG with him in attendance. Oh, and that crappie... Anyway, you're not too far away and if it's more CSBG you want, I'm sure Bruce and some of his friends could get them to you. But here we are hijacking a RES thread. Back on topic! :D
HaHa just givin you a hard time Doc. Keep me in mind I'll always be ready, were both just to busy and to far away.. Well bruce hope your house is moving along email me sometime...
BlueGill Godzilla, Those are some nice shellcracker. I am only 65 miles from Guntersville but have only fished there for bass. I've been waiting on an invite from a buddy who does cracker fish it but he has been real busy and never has the time. I have heard that Guntersville is the best in the state for cracker fishing with big bulls which are over 2 lbs taken quite often. I am planning on a march or april visit 2012..may see you there
Bruce, most all the state lakes and watersheds here are stocked with these tasty warhorses. I have caught them on crickets, jigs some crank baits and nightcrawler pieces. I tie a 1/100 Cabelas black or yellow head with squireltail and tip with nightcrawler ,but when they are really biting no tail tip is nessasary. I have also found that a bottom presentation with worms or crickets is best when worked like you are plastic worm fishing for bass. A pick up and move about a foot at a time will produce tons of bites, you just have to keep a tight line on your and be ready for that freight train hit.. Dangit I'm ready for spring..hahahaha
Shellcracker question, which gets bigger, the female or the male?? In my favorite lake, it seems like I'm catching 10inch males but females up to 12inches. I'm thinking because the males guard the nest, they don't get a chance to survive as long as a female does. Those suckers get plucked off of the nest every spring.
I would assume the male should get bigger though, if he gets lucky enough to avoid getting plucked when on guard duty. But I've also heard that the biggest shellcracker in a lake don't actually guard the nest.
That's a great question. I've wondered that myself. My personal experience is the same as yours. Bigger females. But with bluegill you will find more 10-inch+ males. Anybody else?
Same here...more big female crackers and about 60/40 on big male gills to big female gills. I don't have near the experience with crackers as do many of you all out there...they are actually an introduced specie to Maryland waters. But I know this...they are skittish on the beds, great at guarding and tougher to catch on lures than are bluegills around here.
The past couple years I've found the male crackers to be bigger in length than the females. Most all of those fish were caught during the spawn, so the females were fat and full of eggs, but the males were larger overall.
It could just be the bodies of water I'm fishing and the timing of the spawn, which has more males on the nest at the time? But the females generally run a little smaller for me.
I'd be curious to know more about their feeding habits during the spawn, for each gender. But I agree with Jim, that you need to use a stealth-like approach due to their skittish nature and fish for them differently than gills.
I also tend to catch them in a little deeper water than Gills, and around different bottom structure.
Has anyone ever trolled for shellcrackers..it will work right now . They are in shallow again in some lakes filling up on larve that is hatching out. Don't know if it's Cadice flies or Damsel but the crackers are heavey feeding on them..Water temp is low 70's
I put 50 res in my pond 2 years ago. Never caught one yet. Either they died, or they are getting enough to eat. Anyone have any clues on how to catch them? (tried fishing the bottom) The water I put them in is only about 2' deep now.
We have been catching REs in 15 - 20 FOW slow trolling jigs with a cricket. They are fall feeding on several hatches going on. Water temp is 73F to 75F. Lots of fun and nice size fish.
Hey LedHed...Our water back east went from 72 degrees on Friday to 64 on Sunday evening. Huge cold front and cold rain. I was so surprised that we had such a good catch on Sunday...38 bluegills and redbreast and 8 bass.

I think this was the first time I caught a RES in my pond. It was 9.5". Caught with a 1" GSF.
