Taking advantage of extremely mild weather for August in Coastal North Carolina.......water temps were in the 90s as the July calendar was torn off to expose August.....many locations on the Albemarle have dropped back into the high 70s providing Fall like fishing which is extremely fun.......I taught my friend Joe how to doodlesock with a ice jig on a ten foot telescopic around structure and heavy cover and we have enjoyed a great weekend of bluegill excitement.........Here's a few doubles from the last couple trips.....
Friday was a good time........
Joe caught on quick and really enjoyed this technique........small # 10 Brobugs were the winner..........
Just a great weekend of fishing........you can't beat 58 degrees at first light in the middle of August in the south.........not everyone is enjoying this break but always take advantage of the lowering water temps late Summer and into Fall.......can be the last good fury in a region that doesn't support any ice fishing.........
Water temps remain rather moderate with the mild November nearly half over with local rivers in the northeastern part of the state remaining above 60 degrees in most locations with several locations upwards of 65 to 66 degrees.........Some fish are still rather shallow in two to three feet but what has worked for me this month is fishing intermediate depths of 5 to 8 feet on most creeks and rivers.........Veteran's Day brought me the enjoyment of catching tidal slab crappie which is a lot of fun on telescopic gear.......go get you some soon before the cold weather over runs the region.......Mother Nature often pays you back for the good days so we have trouble ahead............Good luck fishing North Carolina Style.....
The crappie bite has taken off in the last week on the Albemarle........fish are still working transition zones staging to move into their wintering grounds.........
Mild November weather has provided local anglers on the Albemarle some bonus fishing this season.........The fall crappie bite is well under way and water temps still near 60 on the 22nd of the month has most other species still willing to hit an offering...........good luck and hope everyone has a great Thanksgiving.......Good luck fishing North Carolina Style......
Thanks Dick........We do have a great variety of species here that I love Carl.......something is normally hitting around here and it's nice to know the water and trends so good now......
Went out to Mountain Island Lake Sunday. Could not find a fish anywhere. Nobody else caught a fish. I imagine the front passing through caused the fish to go deep. But was still a good day on the water. After being off the water since September, everything thing is well again!
Got out on a Piedmont flow on Saturday. It was an adventure; we did not realize how much fine silt mud there still was from the recent flooding. We had a heck of a time getting on and off the river. The water was up, but not crazy high and relatively clear. Tough day though; I caught one bass around 11", 2 bream around 7" and one around 5". None of the other 3 guys caught anything so I felt like I did okay. I geared way down - a green/black 3/4 grub on a beetle spin. It was a good day out on the river, probably the last of the year.
Been a crazy December for weather almost everywhere in America and definitely here in North Carolina........El Nino' is historically a wet period in the mid Atlantic and we have seen the rain.......many of the lakes have left their banks and flooded out launches......Norman has risen some eight feet in just over a week........crazy to say the least.....as for the tidal waters we are able to recover much quicker than the lakes will.....the crappie were relatively still shallow around Thanksgiving and a few cold nights had them heading for the basin only to return shallow as the water temps in most of the Albemarle has reached as high as 65 and was still 61 to 62 today! Gills had moved to deeper water but suspended with the warming trend and have been pretty active in several local river systems........The Yellow Perch traditionally spawn in late January around the Albemarle but they have been located in several rivers staging in the spawning grounds........I've taken several citation perch in the last few days..........Here's a handful of pictures documenting my week off for the holidays.......if you don't like brackish water you just haven't been with the right anglers.........don't give up on it.......
My friend Chris joined me this past Sunday for a little pole and line fishing and he promptly caught his personal best crappie....
Been foggy almost every trip this month as the water has warmed back up........this picture was from 12/30/2015........visibility down below a 1/4 mile and sometimes much less......
Been out twice this new year so far and it has been dominated by an active Yellow Perch bite...........with a number of citation fish coming on minnow tipped jigs in creek channels and river flats........getting close to spawning, all fish are full of eggs or milk respectively...........temperatures have been moderate and it appears like this trend will continue through January down east North Carolina........had tremendous amounts of rain as usual during El Nino' years............Already looking forward to Good Friday around here but fish can be caught for the patient angler that takes advantage of our mild conditions.........Good Luck to you all Fishing North Carolina Style......
I've been in NC for 20 years, much of my fishing has remained in TN with my father and brother. Dale Hollow and Kentucky Lake are our primary targets for shellcrackers and bluegill. Though I have many friends here in the Carolina's I have failed to find any fishing friends. Most of my outings have been to the coast where I've been learning to surf fish but I know my passion is still in fresh water fishing. Looking forward to learning and sharing with each of you as I learn more about this great area I call home. Willing to share anything to help and hoping for the same in return. thanks in advance.
Only boat at the ramp this morning under overcast skies and an advancing coastal clipper........Splashed at first light on the Tank and fished minnow tipped jigs in deep structure with very few takes.........after an hour of that I shifted over to a smaller jig tipped with a cricket and went to a nearby basin.........Almost immediately began to have bluegill strikes near bottom in 8 to 12 feet of water with the ten foot slope the most productive.............had 47 gills up to 10 inch class and a couple crappie when the leading edge of the rain reached us........it's a little less tolerable to get wet in 30 degree weather so I headed for the launch at 10:30 and was soaked by the time I picked up......would like to get back on the basin tomorrow but it will be tough with high winds behind the front.............it was nice to catch a mess since I've been so busy this month at work......good luck to all!
Welcome to the group Timmy.........share some of your Pasquotank River fishing stories with us! Have you caught some of the big coppernose gills over the years?
you mentioned crickets, are you able to get them this time of year.live couple hours west of you but we cant get them to early april.Must be a different supplier their.Anyway you keep having days like that going to cause me to find some.Never really thought of trying them this early, just goes to show great fisherman like yourself can teach some of us a lot.Good luck and I hope to get on the tank or indian town by may.
Hey Timmy thanks...........I'm fortunate that a friend in the business stocks crickets year round so I fish them all year long........with the brutal temps this weekend the crickets appeared dead but they were just so cold they couldn't move...........with the exception of some back waters the Tank is remaining it's signature dark color and area striper fishermen are catching them in the river now...........perch catches are picking up on local rivers including the North..........good luck when you get down Timmy!
Well a very frigid weekend/holiday by down East North Carolina standards but the gills responded deep in area basins and I did very good Sunday and Monday only slowed by heavy rains on Sunday morning and big time north winds earlier today..........very few of the 100 gills I caught were shallower than 10 feet and most were near bottom........the crappie appeared to be deeper in both basins I fished so I was above them and only took 15 this weekend........worked the gills hard with cricket and baby crawfish tipped jigs........the Morgan Electric Chicken jig caught 60 of these fish which pink is the dominant color.........a cold week ahead will push our water temps below 40 degrees but they should rebound a few degrees later in the week........Here's a few shots from a solid January weekend on the Albemarle.........
Hey Jason Happy New Year..........I don't have real "high" end fish finders on my boats but I do depend on them for temperature and depth.........I do watch the fish indicators for a clue but don't make any determinations from it other than the presence of bait and fish.......the screen shots were full the last couple days as is the case during the coldest periods.......How you been Jason?.
Good deal Jason......hope you have a great 2016 and share some of your testimony and pictures with the group.......if I can get anywhere close to last year and 2014 I will be very happy........we've had a nice run down east with no significant fish kills in many years so we are peaking from a panfish life cycle........I've got some great places that return to my fishing lineup for 2016 including one body of water that I have rested since amazing results in 2013.....It's public water and may have been hit by other anglers but this technique has paid off big time in the past so we'll see how it turns out........with just 60 days until spring it's very exciting..............
So I got out ahead of Winter Storm Jonas on Thursday and had to break through skim ice on the Albemarle after several nights in the teens........Most of the state is in the grips of the storm this weekend so we'll wait it out and hopefully get back out soon........tremendous rains and the associated runoff overnight in the Northeast corner of the state........Noreasters are a way of life around here so we'll get through this one and hope for some 60s soon to rebound............
Got a nice batch for the fryer and almost froze to death earlier today getting them cleaned.........but one of my favorite meals is fried fish in the winter so we'll enjoy them......
Just posting cause I know Charles and Dennis fished it last year, and since Speckle and some of the guys on the coast read this board now, thought they may be interested too.
The Vanceboro Rotary Club and the local Boy Scout Troop up there will be having there annual panfish tournament Saturday April 30th, rain or shine. Entry fee is $40 per team and 1st place is 40% of total entries. It's a 15 fish aggregate weight and only blue bream, shellcrackers and red breast are weigh-able fish.
I'm not affiliated with those folks, but I've fished it for several years, always had a good time. If you like to bream fish and want to fish a good tournament, here's your chance. They give away a lot of door prizes, have a good turn out and you typically see some really nice fish caught.
Thanks for the lead Richard........those are very good panfish waters as well in that region.......Pamlico head waters are very similar to the Albemarle........I'll be fishing some local tourneys by then but I may stick my pole in that draw........

Thanks Jeffrey. Tying more flies now (those fish up in the trees seem to always get away!) getting ready for the next trip.
