The fishing is on here in the Charlotte/piedmont area. Been out 3 times lately and the bluegills are shallow and very aggressive. I have about 100 nice fillets in the freezer for a fish fry at work in a couple of weeks. More detailed reports when I have a few extra minutes.
That's good news David.....we are getting close in the coastal region but we need a nice warm up to throw things over the top.......looking forward to your details!
Jeffrey- even with the cooler temps and rain, the bluegills are plentiful this spring. The fish seem to be larger this year also. Whereas I can keep a cooler of 8-10 inch fish and throw back everything smaller. The choice of colors or depth isn't even much of a factor this year. Although I am wearing out the mealworms. I keep a fresh worm on everything I put in the water regardless of the jig, spinner or fly. The fish have been caught anywhere from 1-8 ft of water. (on a side note, we were catching bluegills in open water in as much as 20ft of water at Santee Cooper. Deep water gills-that was new for me.) One key I have noticed this year is the importance of moving around. If I find a spot and catch 2-3 big fish then a few small ones in a row, I move locations. It seems that once the small fish are on to you, they are more aggressive and beat the larger fish to the bait. I repeat this process to 3-4 locations then go back to my original spot and start over. This seems to be my way of targeting the bigger bluegills. Also, I always work 2 poles. I toss one set of jigs under a float and cast another with a spinner or curly tail. This lets me cover 2 different areas and also tells me if the bigger fish want a floating/stationary bait or a moving one. Happy fishing everyone!
Wow, after a hot couple of weeks in April, the bite has really dropped off here in the piedmont. I got out three times recently and the numbers are down and the ones being caught are small.
That's crazy David...wouldn't have expected that...the bite is incredible in the coastal region.......I fish from my boat 90% of the time Jason....I visit a few ponds/lakes from the bank......
Welcome to the group Glenn.....I haven't fished the Roanoke in a couple years.....fishing is much better on the rivers I live near........hard to pass up good fishing in my back yard if you will.....
The dark tanic waterways in the northeastern part of the state......The Pasquotank River is my home river but I fish about 15 different rivers.....Some of my other favorites are the Little, Perquimans, Chowan, North, and Yeopim.....
I'm not far from the Outer Banks Glenn, about 30 minutes inland on the northern shore of the Albemarle Sound......I do 90% river fishing....How did the Roanoke trip come about? Are you fishing with folks that have had success there? Knowledge of the body of water you're fishing is key.......
Well me and Tripp wanted to try some where to go camping and fishing so we hooked up with the Roanoke River Partners, Hanging around Broad Creek near plymouth. Any Ideas just starting out with river fishing.
Glenn, Launch at boat ramp in Plymoth. Go up river several miles, under power lines beyond, river apears to break up with smaller, clearer streams entering from right. Excellent fishing up these . Best fishes, Capt. Berle
Glen, I ran a charter boat out of Hatteras for 30 yrs. Excellent fresh water fishing, in ponds scattered on the Island. Bass and Large Gills. Also, Ramp at East Lake near Machews.. Capt. Berle
Thanks Berle, we will try to put in around Jamesville NC. If I can find it !!!!What is the best bait around there this time of year.I will keep that in mind about East lake.
Hope you guys have a great outing Tripp.....North Carolina is one of the top destinations for Bluegill fishing in the country.....put in some scouting and learn the waters and it can pay off for years to come........
Glenn, I am primarly a fly fisherman, using what ever is working. Live bait (crickets & worms ect).. I am sure will work. If you guys travel East on hwy 64, there are lots of canals along the hwy which hold a variety of fish. Easy fishing , worth a try.Watch out for the "Gator"! South of Columbia, left onto old hwy 64 about 3 miles "Little Alligator River" Launch boat at end of bridge. down river. Many Big Gills! Best fishes, Capt. Berle
Welcome to a great site Corey and I appreciate your interest in the "Fishing North Carolina Style" group....Look forward to your input to the group....Bunch of great anglers with lots of information to share.....
HEY COREY welcome to the site and there is lots of info on here. I'm still a novice when it comes to fishing but if you trust in fella's like Jeffrey and other notables on here you'll be ok...........
Absolutely crazy bite lately. Went out yesterday and found 4 bluegills and 2 crappies in about 3 hours. I won't even mention the bass I caught(7) on accident. I switched colors, depths and presentation the entire time. When something worked, I stuck with it a bit but all methods were completely inconsistent.
Now today, a different story. I fished 2 hours and caught 40+ and ended up keeping 19 real nice ones. They were not picky at all, biting pink, yellow, orange and red/black jigs and spinners- all tipped with a wax worm. I tie 2 jigs under my float pole and even caught a few doubles. Always fun to get a double, especially when you think you have 1 big one on the line. The fish were shallow, 2-3 ft,although a few larger fish were caught just off the ledge in 4-6 ft of water.
@ David Wester,
The fish are feeding up for the full Moon later this month. once they start breeding in earnest, the bite will taper off.
Better hit em while you can.
Thanks for the welcoming Jeffrey and David. I would totally agree with David Wester that the fish are definetly acting a little funny this year. I go every weekend and it gets better and better each weekend as it gets closer to that full moon. I never really thought it really played much role but when i fished it last year on May 5th, myself and 2 of my friends caught 90 in 2 hours, this year on may 5th i probly caught 30 or so. I also beleive the unusual weather is making it harder also because its been cold then hot and cold then hot and the fish cant fighure out when its time to do there thing. I primarely use just a worm and a split shot on the bottom with an ultralight rod with 4lb test. It works really well for me, or if they are not hitting the worm ill switch it up and float a cricket. I havent had much luck with bettle spins ever and this weekend im going to try out my fly rod with the normal little poppers you get from walmart. I have not found any beds yet but they are staged outside of where they usually bed so i am paintently waiting for the hot action. Oh and Glenn i hope you get that fish that is worth posting.
Those are all factors Corey.....I can tell from reading your report that you are flexible and respond to the right things.....In my region, water temperature is the single most important factor to catching quality fish period....Sustained water temperatures without sudden changes in either direction will be a common thread to successful outings in the northeast rivers......I'm excited about the weeks ahead as we have turned the corner on this weather.......
9 out of 10 times Glenn I fish under a float....you can't fish the bottom where these gills get this time of year unless you want to donate your terminal tackle......
Glen- I almost always work 2 poles, one with a float and one for casting. I can cover more water and many times one presentation works over the other. Although, when the bite is good I have to choose one.
I am waiting on you to ask If you can fish with Jeffs pole this weekend. Haha it's going to be an adventure. I am pretty sure we will figure it out. Pitch a small bobber and bait of choice. Up next to tree roots and flats. If that doesn't work I will ask Jeff to use his pole. Haha look forward to fishing the infamous river of the mysterious north east. Jeff and the rest of he gang thanks for your support as Glenn and I learn to panfish. Being new to the game brings lots of room to get better. Just looking forward to the family camping trip.
Just calling for some hit and miss showers with a lot of overcast conditions...should play into the hands of the fishermen this weekend...looking forward to some great river fishing......got plenty bait and a guest for each day....should be a whole lot of fun! Good luck to everyone Fishing North Carolina Style this weekend! Let us know how it goes.....
I went and saw Glenn and Tripp on the upper Pasquotank River this afternoon...They have basically stayed in West Creek as it is very close to the camping platforms on Goat Island......They were working hard to catch dinner and had stories of the big coppernose that had broke the line........They were overcoming the challenges of today's weather......They had a nice mixed bag and really liked the scenic river.....Look slike more rain tomorrow so hopefully they can salvage a few more hours before heading home......Nice to meet you Glenn and Tripp!
Jeff I want to give out a big thank you for every thing you did for us. The rain was trying but we had a great pan fish dinner last night which made it all worth it. Very nice to meet you yesterday Jeff. Tripp and I are already talking about next time.
Good people and Bluegill fishing are a great combination Glenn.....I hate that the rain made it tough on your camping......Pasquotank is a very scenic and productive panfish destination.......It takes time and patience to learn the waters you fish...I was proud of your efforts to catch dinner yesterday in a brand new location....When we left you guys this morning Eric and I hit another favorite creek of mine and we found some big Coppernose......Ended up with some great gills and we headed out at 12:30 when an approaching thunderstorm ended our trip........We'll be in touch and keep us posted on your bluegill fishing, we'd love to hear about it! Here's a few nice ones from earlier today....
I would have to say I am now addicted. Jeff you fish some beautiful waters and are very good at it. Thank you so much for taking the time to bring us ice, wisdom, encouragement. Look forward to the next trip up to your neck of the woods.
No worries Tripp......obsession is the word.....glad you guys came up and the next step is to fish together.....Pasquotank is just one of twelve great rivers in our region.....three to four that I would place as a 10 on a scale of 1 to 10.....Beautiful water, low pressure, quantity and quality.........it's a top public venue in bluegill nation......
Went frog gigging friday night and got 30, then turned around and hit the river Saturday and tore them up. We got our 90 in like 4 hours. My son had a blast. The bite is definetly on and is only going to get better as the full moon gets closer and closer. All fish were caught on crickets and a bobber in like 2-5 ft of water and sandbars where they are going to bed. I posted a pic of my success on my page if yall would like to check it out.
Nice report Corey....I've gigged about 30 nice bull frogs this month....had a low water event earlier in May that gave us good access to the frogs.....Full Moon is just a couple days away now.....looking forward to getting back out this week....Grass shrimp are getting harder to catch as the native grasses get thicker and thicker with the warmer weather but I always have crickets for a back-up and they work fine for me.......
Oh Yeah Tripp......just been updating on the pictures during our family vacation.....caught roughly 2,000 gills since June the first up here.....My mom caught one a pound and a quarter last week near Goat Island.....it's in my pictures......We've had a great vacation and I'll be doing some updates when things slow down a bit.........LOL
Things are warming up in coastal North Carolina.......most area rivers are in the middle to upper 50s now.......crappie are starting to move in.......dogwoods are blooming and the Full "Worm" Moon is Sunday.......got to fight some wind this weekend but with so many people wanting to fly kites off Jockey's Ridge, they deserve a little breeze every now and then.......forecast appears to predict moderation at night so things should continue to improve in the weeks ahead....good luck fishing North Carolina Style.......Here's one of 23 Crappie caught shallow on the Albemarle today......
