You guys need to seriously try to target them on the fly, it is insane fun. You have to creep up to them not spook them when they're in really shallow.

www.flycarpin.com is an excellent resource.

I have yet to catch one on the fly. I have caught several on light spinning and even an 8# one can run you up and down the stream.

Never caught a Carp  but want to .I see them in a few shallow rivers nearby .( NJ and  NY) I'm guessing fish I saw went up to about 5 # or maybe a bit more .

I generally prefer light tackle and have for many years. UL spinning was the order of the day and for the fly I use my 2wt day in and day out. The first time I walked a known carp infested river that flows thru my old home town I took my 8 1/2' 5wt. After seeing some of the bruisers cruising the shallows I went home and dug out the 7wt. I still didn't entice any takers but I sure felt better. 10, or even 15# ers would be fun on a 5wt but the big ones might serve me my lunch. I saw several in the 20# range and a few that appears much bigger. I am looking forward to my next visit and the 5wt stays home on this trip. .....and yes one may well need a good drag and lots of backing so be ready for a heck of a ride with a 5wt. and probably even a 7wt.

Forget 8wt. 5wt on a 4wt WF is more than enough to handle them. Make sure to have good backing. Used Tooty's rod to have fun with a lucky 8lbs a wee bit back during my work outing. Wished I had someone to snap that shot for me.

my suggestion on fly fishing for carp;; get a good fiberglass rod; in around a 8 wt. put plenty of backing on it to!!

Thanks for joining You all!...

Bruce, Ray... there was a long gap from my teenage year first picking up a fly rod until June 2013 when i bought a setup up for gills... the addiction was set i wanted to catch everything on the fly rod... carp was one of the first species that crossed my mind... for these brutes ive been noticing in my reservoir here would have easily had its way with my 5wt.... im going to give it a try but i need something heavier.

So are you thinking unconventional techniques with split shot hook and bait?

Jim… I was obsessed with the Euro style of fishing for carp which started just a few years ago watching WFN on cable. What a great way to fish! I mean electronic rod pod stands, bivy shelters and everything.

Bruce I envy  you the large carp population in your area. I have not had much success finding them in my area close by. What little time I have spent chasing them has been out of state. I am sure they are around close but I just have not found them. I prefer to find them close as I don't like to travel long distances any more to fish. Just getting old and lazy I guess

I seriously started Carpin Euro Style in 2011. Matt and I have been blessed to have landed numerous 20 to 25 lbers from local lakes. Hope we can add to the group.

Thanks!
