Learned on glass 6 Replies

You bet I used them. I learned on glass. That was all that was available besides the high dollar bamboo. My favorite rod was a little 6 1/2' Heddon 5wt. I started on a real cheap Shakespeare that I…Continue

And like everything else cheaper in China as you know the quality is not as good and suffering..

We older farts grew up with steel and Fiberglass Rod and at the time that's all there was to use for a long time. Then came along the world of tournament fishing and and improvements big time not only on our rods but our reels. Back when the tournament  fishing started then came out the graphite rod then boron. The new reels are far superior than the reels of yesteryear with bearings where sleeves use to be and not just one bearing but numerous bearings to make then cast and reel as smooth as silk and on top of the they lightened them up so you can fish for hours without tiring out our arms and hands. But where the glass rod shines to this date they can take much more abuse than the rods of today that's the price we pay to be able to feel a dime on the bottom as we retrieve our baits. True you can feel so much more than the rods of yesteryear but to this date I don't think there are any you can abuse like our old glass rods. Shame some of our younger people will never know that feeling.

I'll take your word for it Leo and that is really too bad, they were a great company and industry leader for years.

Lamiglass, or rather the cloned version of the Lamiglass, is indeed made in China. I got two Bass Pro Shop brand made in China, which are lamiglass blanks. I fell back on my butt seeing them in Bass Pro while shopping for my replacement rods. I got two, and loved the rods.

LEO LET ME GET THIS RIGHT , LAMIGLAS MADE IN CHINA? Been out of that market a long time and wasn't aware they are made there now! Lamiglas was an industry leader for yyyyyyyyyyyears and can't believe it if  what you say is true.......

I love lamiglass. I have two, made in China (*sigh*), with really pathetic metallic ferrels and guides. I need to replace them to better stainless steel ones after just 6 outings.

I used to have Kencor's magnaglass rods, now somewhere at the bottom of the lake's bed). The lamiglass and magnaglass are just like fiberglass Wonderods. Just plain awesome to cast, and have so much bending capacity to them during heavy weight bouts.

GGGGGGGGGGOOD COMMENTS LEO and couldn't have said it better myself buddy!!!! Glass rods can be broken , that is a common misconception, but you really have to work at it cause I've done it myself by making a sssssssstupid mistake and broke my favorite ultra light that way. FFFFFortunatly was able to repair it with another rod section and as good as new now and still catching fish I might say!!!!!!

I had some graphite rods I built of course , before going back to glass and one in particular that  I loved and sold , THAT I GREATLEY REGRETED LATER, was a Lamiglas IM7 rod I had built myself and 4 other fellas. That was a rod of ttttttttremdous casting ability and sorely miss it. Would I use one again? Only if all my wonderods were broken and couldn't get another one..
Thanks for your insight Leo and stories!

I'm not hiding from view Tooty. Just in my man-cave (the garage), trying to mod the Fish Cat float tube until it falls apart.

I remember my first fiberglass rod. It was loaned by my uncle during the first fishing trip in the U.S., so we could visit Salton Sea to catch tilapia and covina. The first rod was, if my memory served me, a 8'6" Shakespeare spinner combo, quick action, loaded with 14lbs Walmart brand mono. I cannot remember the models the rod and reel were since I just transitioning from bamboo and broomstick rods into newer technology in the 80s.

First few casts on the fiberglass rod, I was hooked. I was truly hooked. The feel of the fiberglass rod, with the reeling action that was totally brand new to me, fighting against the large tilapia and covina got my blood flowing, unlike the bamboo pole that I normally use with a make-shift can/bottle which held my line.

As the years progressed, I've tried newer technological advancement of graphite variety for both spinning and fly rods. A love-hate relationship was formed. Love the action of the graphite, but hate the fragileness of the material. Thanks to Tooty, I finally to reunited with the fiberglass rods that had long eluded me, and they're fly rods!! Love them so much. I got his Professional and Purist wraps. I held onto the Purist, and gave the Professional to my father-in-laws. My father-in-laws is now hooked, since he always wanted to start out fly fishing. The Purist wrap, although shorter, can launch the line at least 10 feet further than the Professional wrap. Why? I haven't the slightest. False cast for the fiberglass pole is ridiculously crazy.  I can put so much stress on the fiberglass to yield that maximum casting distantly, similar to the bamboo poles, that I can't seem to place on the graphite. Always in fear in over stressing the graphite poles that I may crack or break it during mid cast.

I now rig everything on my pontoon and float tubes to house the fly rods, using both fly and micro spinning reels. Can't  imagine what the fly rod cannot do in comparison to the spinning..However, if I'm chasing after marlin and sharks, I think I need to use my salt spinning rods.

HEY STEVE, DDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDON'T BE AFRAID to use your old wonderods as there are lots of em out there !!!!!!! I understand completely not wanting to use em for sentimental reasons , but these things were made to be used AND APPRECIATED BY FOLKS JUST LIKE US!!! I have many rods here for sale and can find just about anything with in reason and am not trying to sell my old stuff on this site. Just a thought and hope all understand that point. Point is I do use em now and do not use any rods of recent manufacture , just old stuff and love it and am sure there are lots of folks out there who feel the way I do. I"m old and like old familiar stuff. ONe thing I do use is new spinning reels cause the old ones in decent shape are hard to come by and new reel technology has come so far it can't be duplicated by old reels.

I've mentioned before my own personal reasons for using vintage equipment and likes and dislikes of new rods. I try to be objective about this new technology and were it's leading us all and most of what I say on here needs to be taken with a grain of salt , so to speak, because most of it is my opinions only and not trying to influence anyone into going back in time like I have, Leo has , and a couple others in this group.......

 THANKS AGAIN ONE AND ALL!!!!!!

TTTTTTTTTHANKD TO ALL WHO HAVE JOINED MY NEW GROUP and to be perfectly honest am surprised and delighted that there is that much interest on these old rods!!!!!!! Thanks Tony for being the administrator and your help is greatly appreciated.

Rick the site link you put up is the one I originally used years ago to establish age of the rods my self and have gone one step further than most: I printed all 72 pages of numbers for reference in the future in case the site ever goes down for any reason . Also printed up the history and  so forth on Shakespeare rod company and the complete guide to Fly rod manufacture dates and how long each model was made. It's all in my safe for safe keeping in case all other info gets lost. Thanks Rick for posting the link as it is Invaluable to us collectors out here............
