Shakespheare made a close face reel that would fit on any spinning rod. Same concept but the fisherman was not limited to any given rod. I knew an old feller that use one on a 9' fly rod to softly cast bait in a stream with very little or no added weight. I think the rod he used was a lamiglass blank. He was quite successful with his technique.
