I caught 4 bluegill Thurs. before I laid my pole down around a post, and went to get my fishing chair. It never got pulled in before when I did this, but it did then. Whatever it was swam all around the pond, and I couldn't get it with a net, even though the pole was floating. It finally snagged on something and went under forever. BUT, I still had the 4 bluegill in my trap, only they were gone! Nothing there but a hole big enough for a med. sized bluegill to go through. So, today I found a…

BUT, I still had the 4 bluegill in my trap, only they were gone! Nothing there but a hole big enough for a med. sized bluegill to go through. So, today I found a unused spincast reel and old pole and went fishing. That has got to be the worst reel made anywhere. It snagged up inside every time I cast it. So, I cut a piece of line and tied it to my chair, but a worm on the end, and threw it in. (do I sound desperate?) Caught a fair sized bass, and put it in the trap. Big ol bass can't get out that hole. Well, guess what? The reel, and trap are now in the garbage.
Looking for Rotenone or someone to do it cheaptag:bigbluegill.ning.com,2013-02-11:2036984:Topic:3511552013-02-11T00:16:50.369ZMagnolia Rickhttp://bigbluegill.ning.com/profile/RickMowery

Thanks for this cool group everyone! I currently have a 1/4 acre pond that I'm wanting to redo. I am unable to locate a source for Rotenone or someone to do it for a good price. I live in MD, so if anyone can help provide any information for me, I'd greatly appreciate it!

Hey everyone hope you all are great fishing season and enjoying the summer, unfortunately at my pond the fish are not doing all that great this summer. My pond has always produced 4 to 5 pound bass as well as a good population of 9-10 inch fat bluegills but, this summer is a different story. The biggest bass that i have been catching are 15-16 inchers and are pretty dang skinny, and the bluegill seem to be skinnier in the shoulders as well. We have always been on top of taking out fish regularly so i am not sure if overpopulation is the problem. Any ideas or suggestions would be great!
I don't own a pond (yet!) but had a question that I hoped some of the group members could provide input on. I visit a variety of local ponds in my area and each seems to have its own unique dynamics, often based on the plant life and animals that reside there.

One local pond has EXTREMELY clear water and the fish are very wary. Otherwise, the population seems to be in very good health and the balance of bass, crappie and bluegill appears to be good.

I noticed 2 species of what appear to be clams. I did some research and all the sites listed these as "freshwater mussels". The numbers of the smaller species of mussel is unbelievable. If you look closely, you can see the breathing holes and there are thousands or millions of these little shellfish everywhere in the shallows. I am unsure how deep they might go and if they are present in the middle of the pond.

I am assuming these mussels are responsible for the clarity as they filter the water in order to feed.

Has anyone seen mussels in their ponds? If so, what effects do they seem to have on pond dynamics?

Hi Fellow Fishers,

I have a new pond, about 1 acre, stocked with cc and hbg. We had some flooding here, after things settled I found I have acquired 3 turtles, not the loggerheads I normally see in farm ponds here, but 8" snappers anyhow. So the Question is, do I eradicate them, or, tolerate them?

My pond outflow is 40 yards from a creek and 5' in elevation above standard level of the creek. The creek rose to within a foot of the outflow elevation, while I was dumping water at a tremendous rate, filling a 15" culvert. After the water dropped I was checking to see how many fish I lost, not too many it doesn't appear, but I found I had gained 2 @9" Lmb. i suppose they entered the outflow during high water?

Hey pond dudes and dudettes.

I have a 1/2+ acre pond. As noted previously, I had it going good, but lost a lot of fish in a flood...plus my feeder got messed up . The spring, I am adding 650 3-5 inch CN bluegill. I am thinking about Tilapia in May for "fish food" and "human food". Any comments about Tilapia...amounts and effects to the pond...are appreciated!

Thanks...Hugh...I will send picks when I get to the cabin.

I am researching the subject of aeration of small ponds. A family member has a small pond that is approx. 1-2 acres, kidney shaped, with a maximum depth of 7 or 8 ft and a average depth of a couple feet. It is a pond that suffered an organic fish kill a few years ago when the horse pastures surrounding it and the pond became one. We have since restocked it with bluegill, bass, and fathead minnows. It is a pond that suffered an organic fish kill a few years ago when the horse pastures surrounding it and the pond became one. We have since restocked it with bluegill, bass, and fathead minnows. There were a few bullheads, green sunfish, and a fair amount of golden shiner minnows that survived the flood. We didn't follow the book while stocking, but there is now a good population of fish that I do not want to lose this winter. I would like some opinions on a good and economical electric aeration system. I am convinced that one is needed for overwintering the fish and for year round aeration.

Please offer your recommendations and/or experiences and where to shop for these.

I have a 5 acre pond, should I be worried about common carp effecting the fishery? I have seen carp of all sizes so it seems that they are reproducing successfully. What can they do to a pond and what is the most effective way of getting rid of them? If they can't be removed, how can I minimize the damage they are doing. Any tips would be extremely helpful!

I have a 5 acre pond with bass, bluegill, crappie, and catfish. I was thinking about getting a protein based food called Aquafeed to feed the fish in order to keep them fat and healthy. Is this a good or bad idea? The last thing I want to do is to screw up the system.
