ULTRALIGHT!  There is no better way (or fun way) to fish for our favorite fish, the Bluegill!  Where I fish here in southern California, you HAVE to use very light lines because of the clear water and finicky fish.  For us to catch a big Bluegill, crappie or Redear, we've had to learn how to use tiny jigs on 2 lb test line by also using the correct rods and ultralight spinning reels with extra-smooth drag systems.  Some of those giant panfish can really take off, especially the  Redears!

I just wanted yall to know I too use ul equipment, not just a flyrod. I use a 5 ft graphite spinning rod, line weight 1-4 lbs, lure weight 1/16-1/4 oz, flurocarbon line, with different hi -speed retrive , lots of ball bearings spinning reels. This set up is what I use to chase smallmouth  in the Ozark rivers, I catch plenty of bluegill with this, sometimes bluegill think they are smallmouth and act like it. All my artificials are downsized bass lures, spinners ,spoons, jigs, and plastic worms. Micro-spins are my favorites. So whats your favorite ul lure.

Has anyone heard of Okuma and have thoughts on them?

Also are there any brands I should stay clear of?

Delete Comment Zack -Maybe get a rod rated  for 1-4 lb test in your price range and a second rod rated 2-6 and get a good reel with a spare spool  like a Pflueger .Use different line  strength on each spool and save money swapping reels until you can afford a second reel.

Trout fishing in a small creek with jumping fish up to a foot long with 2#test is a blast! I wouldn't mind at all hooking and landing bigger fish  on 2# test .It is a great feel with UL gear.

Derrick, I 'm sure more UL enthusiasts will be coming your way shortly. Thanks for starting the group.

I need to get a few UL setups can anyone recomend a few options depending on what they are used for.

I would like to get a nice one but really prefer to buy an inexpensive setup that I can use for BG, as I do not have much to spend at this time.

Thanks

I started fishing ultra light when I was a kid.  The pond that I fished, was a heavily fished county park pond. Being new to fishing I had a handmedown zebco 202 I only fished for bluegill there, (very very small bluegill) and the rod was good enough for a long time to come.  It seemed to me though that these little fish might be more fun if I used a lighter rod.  I was right I bought a cheap little rod, a cheap little reel, some 4# test, and when I caught that first fish I knew I was on to something I loved.  There's been a lot of little fish, and a few big fish caught since then.  While the equipment that I now use has gotten better, and the fish I catch are more likely to be bigger ( I did say more likely ), I am so glad I got Hooked on ultra light.  If you haven't figured it out yet let me say it again  I love to fish with ultra light.  Let's hear from some anglers that share my love of ULTRALIGHT fishing fish tales are welcome.

I consider Ultra Light Fishing to be 4# test and under .1/4 oz. and lighter lures or baits. What are you guys thinking?I use 2# test on a Shimano Sensilite 5'6' rod rated for 1-4 #test at the bottom of my ul range.4 lb test I will troll 1/4 oz Cranks on an UL Ugly Stick at the pinnacle of my UL ranges.
