Who thinks they can catch a huge Gill through the ice? Enter it in the MT's 2010 monster bluegill on ice derby!
It starts this weekend, and goes til the ice is gone! Why didn't I start this at the beginning of the ice season? because I just thought of it now!
Just catch a monster bluegill, and if you think it could be the big one, take a pic, post it on this thread, or email it to me and I will post it on the leaderboard on my blog here:…
I am going by length, not weight, since most don't have the best scale for getting an accurate number.
Take it on a board so it is touching the "0" side, and whatever the tail touches, that is your length! Here is an example:

Also, to verify that you caught it this year, put your name and "2010" on a piece of paper clearly readable and inclue it in your picture.

Entry is free and open to anyone that is fishing through a hole in the ice.
No dead beat up or frozen fish will count, take a pic right when you catch it, that is when they look best!

Here is the prize, not a new truck or anything like that, but not bad for a free contest, a framed "2D lifesize replica" of your winning catch. Here is a one I made last fall:
I was thinking this morning about the Midwest BG group and how fun it would be if we held a 1st annual Midwest Bluegill Group Gathering Event, a "schooling" if you will! I was thinking of spring time, around April. I think it would be fun and we can get to meet one another face to face for some laughs and discussion. Just an idea, but it would be great! Any thoughts?

I met andy at the lake for some bluegill and crappie chasing all day. the weather was alot nicer than predicted so we went to "work" looking for those big pannies. I brought my vexilar fl-18 flaher out in my tube for the first time, it worked great! I found weeds on a break from 5 to 7 ft and the nice gills were there and a few perch. unfortunatly tons of hungry yearling largemouth bass too that I cannot seem to keep of my hooks.
We wanted to get some crappies but only got one in the area so we decided to try in the middle while snacking, but no crappies there, didn't even mark one. kicked over to the east shore after snackin and started getting a few in 2 ft of water along with a zillion dinky bass. we went into a bay on the southeast end to get out of the wind and cha ching! found the slabs and lots of bluegills too most real close to shore. Andy had to go, I decided to stick around when fishface showed up with his daughter for the evening bite. Glad I did because the crappies really lit it up with a bite on every cast! Baits I used today Gulp!fishfry, JRs ringin stub grub, t.h.e. jig tipped with a exude microshad, berkley power tube 2"white.
More here, tons of pics:
Any of you got any traditions that you continue for the opener? Special spots with special people? I know bluegills are open year round but there is something about the opener.......isn't there? Or am I the only one?
My opener will hopefully consist of some bluegill fishing but since I am going with my dad it will be mostly walleye fishing. We restarted our tradition fishing together last year and went to Whiteface (I had lived in NC for 7 years). This year we are staying a little closer to home and going to a small lake called Strand. I am looking forward to spending the day with my dad on the lake. We don't get to many days together anymore so we slate the opener as one of those days just for us. Hopefully the fish will be there too!
