well dick, the muddler is still in its original form a sculpin imitation.fished near the bottom in a stream.the way allan ties them is the western version.where they actually used a minnow pattern to imitate a hopper on western trout streams.dan baily a western commercial tyer gave the muddler the packed DEER hair head.sorry allan but deer  hair is the traditional way to tie it.the original gapen pattern had a more ragged deer hair head and was a sculpin imitation . to be fished deep in brook trout streams.tyed on a heavier streamer hook and often weighted.not knocking your flies allan they are beautiful.but i do think the origins of things is important.fly tyers for the most part freely share their creations.there are 100s of variations on most sucessful flies.its cool that gapen and dan bailey are still in business

one more thing Allen;; when I used yours;;  even if it did sink just a bit;;  didn't matter!!  in fact almost better!!  it was hilarious watching those gills knocking that one around!!

Thanks for the info Allen. Nice bait after looking at the basic pattern I was getting ideas but had to know weather it sunk or floated.

Dick, yes, they float with the hook point hanging down.

Most of my Muddlers are tied with Caribou hair (the white/grey stuff that's pictured).  Caribou floats even better than deer hair, but, is much softer than deer, and takes a little more practice to trim.

My Caribou Muddlers will float, and retrieve right at the surface.  They make a great "wake bait" as the Bass anglers call it.  However, it doesn't wiggle.  I have seen Muddler patterns that have brass coneheads on the hook; those will sink, but all that hair really pushes some water, and creates a wake that fish can sense, even underwater.

Thats quit a unique jig Jim who would have thought. I'm all done with jigs for the year flies now.

Thanks again Jim just got a couple ideas floating around in my head I'll see if I can transfer them onto a hook. I ordered some deer hair today just a small amount for now to see if my idea even will work..

was looking thru stuff, this ones for you dick

the hook rides down dick, most streamers do unless weighted to flip like a clouser minnow or tied on a jig hook.cant wait to see what you come with dick

by the way Jim thanks for the info. I think I'm getting a couple ideas here and that's scary.

I thought with all that deer hair that was the case but wasn't sure. Do you know if the hook is hook up or down.
