dick-people who tie those elaborate deer hair bass bugs use specific types of hair,i.e.belly body flank as all has different textures.just get whatever is cheaper your going to be trimming most of it off.i use the tips of belly hair on my poppers.it flairs out nice and i think it gives the fly texture.mening it feels like a bug and they dont spit it as much.i feel that a gill can inhale and spit a fly much faster than i can set the hook.

Thanks Mark can't wait till I get my deer hair but sill need to get some turkey tail feathers. I'll order them today.

I tie mine with deer hair, if you pack it tight when you spin the head it will float if you leave it sparse it will sink. happy tying!

That will be hard to do since I ordered it off of ebay.

If at all possible, you want to inspect deer hair personally.  I would even recommend opening the package and bend the tanned hide to get a good idea of what the hair is like.

The yellow deer hair that I use for those Mickey Finn Muddlers was done from a summer-killed deer.  The hair is short, and I've found three, maybe four, dead dessicated ticks in the hair.  The red hair that I use for the same fly comes from a winter-killed deer.  The hair is nice and long, and no signs of insects/parasites.

I would highly recommend picking up the longer hair.  The short stuff is good for small patterns, but not bigger ones.

Bucktail is good for streamers, Clousers, tails, etc.  I've tried spinning it a couple of times (back before I really knew what I was doing) and the results were horrid.  I think I still have that bug; I may have to find it and take a pic.  Funny thing is, it has actually caught fish, even though it's an "ugly tie".  Go figure....

Thanks Allen I really haven't found a lot of dyed deer hair. I did manage to order a few small patches of deer belly hair. I have had bad experiences with deer hair but all from the tail I'm hoping this will be a little bit better for me.

Bucktail is really hard to spin, and it doesn't really float much.  Ask me how I know :)

Jim's correct about the availability of dyed deer hair.  The only reason I'm using Caribou is that my wife managed to get A BUNCH of it from a taxidermist (good source for fur scraps), and it matches the basic color of the original pattern.

Thanks Jim. I have had a little experience with deer hair enough to know I didn't like it but it was always buck tail. Hopefully the belly hair will be more manageable. I guess it one of them thing were you practice, practice, practice.

deer hair is cheaper and easier to get in colors than caribou or elk.just take it slow as it is a little frustrating at first to spin.watch a couple videos .also look at deer poppers.humpys ,and another cool fly is a bomber.

Yea Jim after looking on you tube my Idea I was thinking about has already been done so much for raining on a mans parade.  I can see many changes that can be made off of them though. I was looking at the sculpin but down sizing. I'll have to see what I can come up with now and still want to attempt Allens Muddler with deer hair. So I have a few things lined up in the fly department it will be fun.
