Hi John, I find it interesting that you all up north are finding the fish so deep. I wonder if the same would apply here in VA during our coldest months. [We don not get to fish through the ice here.] As I believe you are aware. Thank you again for the most valuable information yet on where the crappie might be / are!

I just run into Black Crappie I have never seen White Crappie but they may be in some lakes up here in NJ .In the Fall this year ,I was getting Crappie as deep as 18 ' mid day on Sunny Days and as shallow as 8' at weed edges when overcast at the Big Crappie lake I fish that has 30 ' max depth. . The smaller shallower mean depth Crappie lake in years past, the fish were 6' on a big sunken tree which reached into maybe 12' of water in the Fall and in Winter, 8' near a relatively…

I just run into Black Crappie I have never seen White Crappie but they may be in some lakes up here in NJ .In the Fall this year ,I was getting Crappie as deep as 18 ' mid day on Sunny Days and as shallow as 8' at weed edges when overcast at the Big Crappie lake I fish that has 30 ' max depth. . The smaller shallower mean depth Crappie lake in years past, the fish were 6' on a big sunken tree which reached into maybe 12' of water in the Fall and in Winter, 8' near a relatively steep bank which is 6' at shores edge leading out to 12-15' feet . Wood cover being preferred cover as weeds weren't available .Bluffs in the big Crappie Lake had them suspended over 25' -30 ' last year from Late October through early December ..I think with the right weed growth, yes they will remain shallow .I have caught Crappie from 12"-16.5" that have related to 3 cover types ,WOOD is good , Rock ,ROCKS and WEEDS indeed!

They need the right cover to stay shallow .In my experience catching many Crappies at two lakes I frequent, Treetop blow downs or weeds will hold them shallow but they prefer the shallower cover that resides near deeper basin areas in the late Fall /through Winter and ice period.Come spring I find them in shallow areas nonadjacent to the deeper basins for whatever reasons . Summer post Spawn I think they will relate better to those deeper cover areas or wherever the bait fish are roaming .
It would have been great if t…tag:bigbluegill.ning.com,2016-11-26:2036984:Comment:7054832016-11-26T07:38:47.299ZSlip Sinkerhttp://bigbluegill.ning.com/profile/SlipSinker

I’ve been following the In-Fisherman Calendar periods since they were introduced late 70’s. it puts fishermen on common ground when discussing fish movements patterns etc.

In the past I have pictured B.Crappie on the deep weed lines and deep drop-offs and have mainly fished for them that way and thought i have done well. My strategy has changed just recently. I have discovered that quantities and quality big B.Crappies are shallow thru-out most of the year. Last open water seasons were the best for me fishing shallow in 6ft or less of water! The schools were there and it took long-casting the jigs for B.Gills for me to discover that.

There was ice on 20% of the lake on the southern shoreline and we were tagging many B.Crappie up against the bank on the northern shore long-casting the tiny jigs. Then we continued tagging them thru-out the rest of the season in shallow water especially in the wood and lay downs. For me it has been an amazing revelation.

With a mild winter thin ice and little snow cover producing more light penetration thus more oxygen in shallow im guessing kept the B.Crappie in shallow. The deep basins were vacant of fish. The B.Crappie had no reason to retreat to the depths for oxygen.

W.crappie moving to the deeper water haunts and the B.Crappie mostly staying shallow in as little as 2 FOW during the day.
