Absolutely, One of my poles is the top section of a 10 foot BNM cane pole. I wrapped the handle for a more traditional look. Works great but does weight over 5 oz .

Same principle but the japanese poles just a bit lighter and able to telescope down to about 12 - 14 inches. Can't do that with a cane pole. Short poles with #20 or less hook and 2# test is deadly in the margins. Right now the only US company making short telescopic pole is South Bend. Pole currently runs about 5.00 USD for a 1.5 meter pole . Pair this with a either a #20 or less fly or hook and hold on . You're micro fishing for less then 10.00 USD. …

Kelly - Thanks.. I use the site for equipment purchases and find it a wealth of information for fixed line fishing. I use tenkara, keiryu , seiryu as well as micro technique when fishing. My poles run from 1.5 to 4.5 meters with the lighter at about 1 oz and the heavier running about 3.5 oz.

Heck, been having that for a long time. You can get a telescoping pole at Wal-Mart. Shoot, they'll sell you+as many as you want.
And if you really want to say you spent some money, buy one that says "crappie" on it somewhere...

Where I find the Japanese methods to really offer benefit is in the terminal tackle end of things

Realize you have been fishing with Tenkara rods for over 3 years so this may be not new info to you. I've found a wealth of info on the following site about fishing for warm water species, http://www.tenkarabum.com/keiryu-fishing.html

The type of fishing is called Keiryu instead of Tenkara. Very similar yet still different. With Keiryu rods they can be used just like pole fishing with jig and float or hook, bait and float. The beauty about them is the compact telescoping pole that almost fits in your back pocket so to speak! They even make several version that can be fished at 3 different lengths.
Hugh

Have fun. I've fished Tenkara for the last three seasons and I'm still amazed at the connection between myself and the fish. I've caught hundreds of bluegill but only a hand full of small bass.

I've also down sized myself to small pole fixed line fishing. The name is micro fishing. I use a 6-7 foot japanese rod, 1 or 2 lb test and hooks sized between 20 -32. I also use ice fishing micro plastics as bait.
