<p>Great tool for ice fishing. Not so hot for open water, too many variables. Current, wind, boat swing, water clarity, light penetration.</p>

Have a Cabela's (5yrs) that is used primarily for ice fishing, love it and worth it. Not for finding fish as much as fine tuning the micro spot in the general spot, tough to troll or drift through a 6" hole and they get finicky in winter. Have used it open water to check weird sonar readings I've come across a few times, not really practical for general usage. I'd go for the down/side imaging sonars out there............$$$$$$$$$$

I would be using both... down imaging depth sounder along with the camera. that would be icing on the cake to actually see what your favorite spot looks like. so i would spend the dollars on the down imaging sounder first.
