One thing I do know is using small spinners for gills does work. I personally use small dark colored baits. I've used small spinners for years. You can cover a lot of water in a small amount of time. Usually when the gills are bedding you cast through the beds. They are not trying to eat it but get it out of there beds they are mouthing it and carrying it out of there bed. You may catch 1 or 2 then they quit, seems like they learn very fast. I found when you come back later to the same beds…

Some of my friends in Indiana were doing great for numbers& size on the little "Fish n Spin" (overhead willowleaf spinner) with copper blades and a chartreuse crawfish body (about an inch long). I did well with a 1/24 oz jig with a propeller on the shaft and either a Brewer fan tail grub on the back or 1" mink strip.

Chad I have caught several on rooster tails but some of my better Gills have also been on Strike King's Bitsy Minnow. As the fish relocate deeper adjacent to the bedding areas I can still pick up some good fish on these Crank Baits. Fun lure to catch those fish on as well! and you always have a shot at Mr. Bigmouth when using these crank baits... Good Luck!
