good morning, guys,

     can anyone recommend a line that will give me more casting distance?  i've been using trilene xl for decades but i would like to try something different.  appreciate the help and Merry Christmas to all

Hey Ken, what's the breaking limit you've observed for the Nanofil and Gliss? My max on the 4lbs and 6lbs test was 6lbs and 9lbs respectively. If Ardent Gliss line is the same as the Nanofil at the 8lbs level, which has a possibly hitting the max at 13lbs, I may be substituting everything in my tackle box as the reserve lines are aged.

…i have never done an actual poundage line/wars type test on any line... i wish... I don't even own a scale... lol... i go by inches. i can honestly state i have never broke off a fish since using super lines circa 2006 just a few bite-offs from n.pike.

there were a few times however when i was fishing 3 or 4# test Nanofil and have a lunker pred on i wish i was using the setup with the 8# GLISS...:>)

LOL I always battled myself about skills vs line. Should I use high test poundage, even though the line is as small as the common mono? What about the skills of using low test poundage to wrestle the larger predators, while reserving the line to have fun with the smaller ones.

Like you, after facing the unknown elements of the waterbody's terrains, lost quite a few large fishes due to long battles, I need to reapproach this with a preservation mindset. I'll go slow on the deep fishes, but I need to pull in the larger ones quickly to release them before they die from fatigues. Constant struggles of what to do.

... the last time the thought of "im glad im using the set-up with 8# Gliss" crossed my mind was when i tagged this trophy Channel Cat... the brand new UL rod ended up breaking a foot from the tip (still under warranty) but the line held up! i made the mistake of over-horsing this fish in

LOL!! Line didn't break, but the rod did. It's like the engine 600HP engine is perfect, but the Honda Civic's body is a bit...trashed.

…the white is nice with the Gliss but is hell when ice fishing... white on white... white doesnt fade in the line... its the natural color of the material

green is my favorite ... but fades over time... but not bad... impossible to see against the water

yellow is great for visibility against ice and the open water... i love using the color in Nano and Gliss ... i dont feel that it is a visual deterrent to the fish ... it has not made a difference with me even in gin clear lakes.

pink i havnt tried but heard red fades to grey in visibility quickly as it sinks

Wow, this one took off!  Figures Leo and SlipSinker would chime in.  Both of those guys are probably using slide rules to help with their calculations.....

I'm just a poor broke Okie transplanted to MI.  I wish I had the funding to get all the different stuff and see how it works for me.  Maybe if I start tying flies/jigs commercially, but......then I'd never have time to go fishing.

I will say this much.  I'm a kayaker.  Absolutely love getting my kayak out on the water.  This past year I started playing around with some deep-water tactics.  Had some good success with it, 'gills and Crappie.  However....... The lake I spent the most time at this past season, for the most part, is only 5 foot deep, with thick submergeant weed cover, and occassional emergent weeds.  The main lake body is probably just a hair under half a square mile.  I started doing some Bass fishing in early summer.  My main tactic is to paddle out, then go upwind until I hit the far shoreline.  Turn around, toss out my drift sock, and let the wind push me, all while I was fancasting around with a topwater lure.

I was using my light-action panfish rod, which is running a Shimano Syncopate 2500 spooled with 10 lbs test PowerPro.  My lure of choice (for the first couple weeks) was a Rebel T10 Jumping Minnow.  That's a fairly large, tail-weighted topwater plug for that kind of rod, but guess what?  I can toss that lure easily 50 - 60 feet, while I'm SITTING DOWN.  That distance is a guess right now.  I need to get out to a football field and do a little casting so I can accurately measure distance.

I was catching A LOT of Bass.  Really surprised myself at how many I was catching.  I even caught a freaking 8" Yellow Perch on that lure!  However, I noticed that I was getting hits from 'gills and other perch, but the lure was really too big to hook them.  I ended up switching over to a small Pop-R.  I wasn't getting that great of casting distance with my light action rod.  I ended up going to my UL Crappie rod, which is a cheap Wally World 4 1/2' Micro Spin UL rod with a Shakespear Sigma 200 spinning reel, spooled with 6 lbs test Nanofil.  Would you believe I can get approximately the same casting range from that rod with a Pop-R?  I've also used the smallest Rebel minnow crankbait available, and get comparable range.  Those two lures have become a staple, catching 'gills, Yellow Perch, Crappie, LMBs, and Smallies.  Heck, I even had a brief connection with what I think was a big ol' gator Northern Pike that ended up spitting the lure after a few seconds.

I will admit that I usually have the wind at my back fishing like this.  That will help with distance as well.

Allen, you may be a poor broke Okie, but in SoCal, no matter how much you make, you're just broke, period! I always seek out the poor man's method to enjoy fishing, but the beast in me always crave for the new tech to test out.

It's great to have consistency in your lake. Our lakes over here, it range between 5ft to as deep (even in the drought) as 120ft. Try to adapt to all scenario and conditions is like trying to rip super glue off your head and crotch. It's really is nuts. If you spend only at one waterbody, you're perfect. If you visit multiple waterbodies, get ready for some heavy thinking. Like you, I love kayaking and float tubing. But man oh man, to stabilize the kayak against the 20mph gusts, that itself is enough to drive you insane. Every little advantage in the rods, lines, and lures help.

I got quite a few of the Pop-R lures in my arsenal I purchased at Bass Pro and Walmart during sales as well, aside from the assorted Rebel lures. It can never be just one. It's all about seasonal match-the-hatch to entice these finicky fishes in SoCal.
