Bluegill - Big Bluegill

Do you love big bluegill?

Hi Everyone,
Just got a few questions. Does anyone really ever use Maribou jigs for bluegills? or is that more for crappie
Does anyone ever use paddlebugs or tubes with jigheads put inside for bluegills?
I have some of these lures but never really used them for fishing bluegills
Let me know
Thanks
Scott

We began using red/white tubes on white jigheads over 5 years ago and outfished our fishing buddies 2 to 1. They finally converted to the tubes and jigs and produced twice the fish than before. We have also tried black/white tubes with same response. While we still attempt other offerings, we always go back to our tubes and jigs as the success rate is much higher.

Marabou is a very fluid material in water - making it a great addition to jigs or as a stand alone jig.

We tend to use marabou jigs when the 'gills are less then active, and let the marabou put the movement into the jig.
A verticle presentation is well suited for this; either under a float, or veritcal jigging.

Insert heads in a ¾" tube (red/white being a preference on local waters here) do well for us during low light in shallow cover - we tend to move to hair jigs or livebait tipped jigheads for any deep water or open water presentations.
Berkley made (or still makes) a micro nymph that I thought would work well for the larger gills, but we had so many problems with fish picking up the bait by its' apendages we stopped using it and went back to micro tubes.

I've done very well with lots of 6-8 inch Bluegills under floating docks in June using plain Marabou jigs under bobbers.White Marabou feathers on red heads.
maribou is a great cold water option. I used to tie many colors and color combinations. now i tie only grey on 1/16 oz ballhead #6 and a few #4. they catch bluegill, redear, warmouth, rock bass, largemouth, smallmouth, walleye, yellow perch, white bass, small channel cats and big shad for me.
I caught some bluegills on maribou jigs. Great lure for clear water or early spring and fall season. I like black, brown or Olive (dark green)! You can get it from Fly Fishing section in Bass Pro Shop or Cabela's. 1/100 oz and 1/80 oz is good size for bluegills but need 2 lbs line for better casting! Or add a tiny float! 1/64 oz is still good for 'gills! More crappies on lighter color like white or yellow for me!
