Good question Michael.......Traditional spoons like the Daredevil have a convex surface, and a concave surface much like a tablespoon....these types of spoons when presented horizontally will ride with the hollow, or concave side up.

Beveled spoons work quite differently.....they achieve similar characteristics via angle of bevel. These types of spoons when presented horizontally will ride with the bevel down, and can be difficult to decipher which way is up.....generally a beveled spoon will ride with the flat side up.....i.e. an Acme Kastmaster rides with the stamp down, and flat side up....Swedish Pimples ride the same with flat side or pattern side up.

The fool proof way to know which way is up prior to rigging the spoon is to tie one on, and examine it upon retrieval.

An inline barrel swivel is absolutely necessary......rigging the hook wrong will result in fouling and missed fish.
Nice article!
Nice article! My only exposure to spoon fishing was on a trip to Canada as a kid. Trolled Red Devils killed the northern pike up there.

I have a small technical question. You talk about making sure the hook points up when you install it. That makes sense for reducing snags, but which way is up on a spoon? They are often symmetrical, and you might have a barrel swivel on the line, and the line can twist as well. Thanks!

SAL: Another thought. Rig a small spoon with a single hook so the point rides up. Not totally weedless but "weed resistant" . Read Bill Modica's writings to understand how to replace and position the hooks.

It is unlikely you will find these hooks at your local tackle store. You will need to order them.

SAL: The smallest size currently listed for the Johnson weedless Minnow is 1/8 oz and 3-3/4" long. You might check the Eppinger Daredevle line of spoons. They make a small weedless "Midget" model that is 1-3/8" long but heavier than you want.

If Johnson made a 1/16 oz model, it should come up from time to time on e-bay.
