Do you love big bluegill?
I've found that large gills and other species that average bigger in a lake do better with larger lures. I've even used 4.5" plastic worms (Kut Tails) with 1/32 oz jigs and caught gills and crappie.
Smaller average size fish seem to strike smaller lures on average.
This is generally true. The latest trend toward giant swimbaits sort of proves it. Too, the general size of bass caught by Drop Shots and Ned Rigs, both typically small presentations, tend to catch smaller fish than larger presentations.
Still, large bass and larger panfish still like a little treat now and again. I don't often go out for bluegills, redbreasts and crappie, and don't land a nice LMB.
Photos of a few I caught a few days ago using a Mepps Plain Aglia, Silver, #2 size and I tossed it on my 2 lbs. Nanobraid. It still hasn't failed me. The bass weighed 3 lbs. 7 ozs.
